Filter by:A new influenza vaccine, known as LAIV (Live Attenuated Intranasal Vaccine) has recently been approved by a number of licensing boards and is given by a spray into the nose. In the United Kingdom (UK), the vaccine has been demonstrated to be highly effective against influenza infection. Further, despite concerns that LAIV can cause wheezing in children under age 2 years, the previous SNIFFLE studies have demonstrated it to be safe in children over 2 years with mild-moderate asthma. The objective of this multicentre study is to further assess the safety of intranasal LAIV in children with asthma and recurrent wheeze, including those with severe symptoms.
The investigators will evaluate sensitization to animal allergens and allergic symptom during contacting animal allergens in Korean veterinary researchers who attend their annual conference. The investigators will compare sensitization to animal allergen and other clinical and occupational factors between subjects who suffer from allergic symptom during contacting animal and those who do not.
The pattern of lower airway inflammation in asthma is heterogeneous, but in many patients, the polymorphonuclear neutrophil (PMN) is the predominant granulocyte infiltrating the airspaces. Although it is known to have an important function in innate immune defense, the role of the PMN in asthma has not been well elucidated. In work in progress, the investigators have identified the receptor for IL-5 on the surface of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) PMNs in a subset of children with severe, treatment-resistant asthma, a characteristic that is not found in peripheral blood neutrophils. While the function of this IL-5 receptor has yet to be determined, preliminary evidence strongly supports a mechanism linking neutrophilic with type 2 inflammation in the lower airways of children with asthma, a discovery that has exciting potential to modify the treatment of asthma. The primary objective of this observational cross-sectional study is to test the overall hypothesis that therapeutic intervention directed against the IL-5R on lung PMNs will decrease inflammation and improve clinical outcomes in patients with poorly controlled asthma. The secondary study objective is to demonstrate that IL-5R expression on lung-infiltrating PMNs is functional, will activate known IL-5R-induced signaling pathways, and will lead to enhanced PMN pro-inflammatory activity including increased PMN recruitment, prolonged survival, degranulation, and release of reactive oxygen species.
Asthma is the most common chronic condition in children and one of the five most burdensome diseases in the United States. Despite this, research and care for childhood asthma are limited by inefficient utilization of electronic medical records (EMRs) to facilitate large-scale studies and care. The primary goal of this clinical trial is to implement the asthma-Guidance and Prediction System (a-GPS) on the Asthma Management Program (AMP, a current care coordination program for asthma care of children aged 5-17 years at Mayo Clinic). Primary hypothesis: The implementation of a-GPS in the current care is logistically feasible.
Poor function of the right side of the heart and rise in pressure of the blood vessels leading to the lungs are two main heart-related factors that are associated with worsening of airway disease. A relatively new method which uses magnetic field to create images of the heart called cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging shows immense promise in detailed and accurate assessment of the heart in patients with airway diseases. This project aims to assess the heart in patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) as well as healthy participants using CMR to help us determine features on CMR that are different is patients with asthma and COPD compared to healthy participants. This may help with early identification of patients who are at risk of episodes of acute worsening of airway disease, called exacerbation, and potentially halt the progression of the heart dysfunction with currently available or new treatments. Study involves one visit at Glenfiled Hospital, Leicester, lasting approximately 4 hours. The visit will include following assessments: clinical history, health status, physical examination, electrocardiogram (ECG), blood tests, lung function testing, echocardiogram and CMR. Part of the study will involve a participant questionnaire in which the participants will rate their CMR experience. The results will potentially change the way CMR is undertaken. A sub-set of the participants will also be invited back to do a one off focus group discussing the CMR experience further.
This is a Comparison Effectiveness Research (CER) study in a population of 13 to 40 year-old individuals with persistent asthma comparing differing levels of texting interventions with each other and with a usual care group. The two texting interventions include 1) texting only the individual with asthma and 2) texting the individual with asthma and an important person in that individual's life such as a parent or spouse. These two texting groups will be compared to a group receiving usual asthma care at Denver Health.
National clinical trial, phase III, multicenter, single-arm, efficacy study, 80 participants of both sexes, aged equal or more than 12 and less than 65 years. The group will use Busonid® (budesonide 200mcg and 400mcg) one application (inhalation) of 200 mcg every 12 hours (400mcg / day). During follow-up visits if the participant has not shown an increase in forced expiratory volume in one second greater than 12% and greater than 0,20L or 200ml in spirometry compared with baseline visit, will increase the dose to 800 mcg / day (2x 400 mcg day). The study aims to revalidate by the National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) the registration of the drug Busonid® which there is a vast scientific literature on the pre-clinical and clinical evidence that the efficacy and safety of budesonide. Thus, outlined is a single-arm study, which is applied to the study of the group of participants the same intervention for a certain period and the participants are evaluated for response.
The objective of this pivotal study is to evaluate the relative bioavailability of SYN010 HFA Inhaler and Symbicort 160/4.5μg in healthy volunteers with charcoal block.
This is an observational prospective study to assess the tolerability and safety of treatment of SCIT Allergovac Poliplus polymerized in depot presentation. The study drug will be administered either by a 1 day Schedule or by a rapid Schedule (3 increasing weekly doses at initiation period till maintenance dose is reached) The study population is both: adult and child, polysensitized to at least 2 allergen sources with rhinitis or allergic rhinoconjunctivitis. Patients may also present a concomitant mild or moderate asthma. The assignment of a patient to a particular therapeutic strategy will not be decided in advanced by a trial protocol but will be determined by routine clinical practice. The decision of the investigator to prescribe a particular treatment will be clearly dissociated from the decision to include the patient in the study. The patients will not suffer any intervention, whether diagnostic or monitoring, other than the usual in clinical practice.
The specific aims of this pilot study are to: 1. Evaluate the effectiveness of the asthma education intervention on asthma knowledge 2. Determine whether the asthma education intervention improves child and parent asthma treatment self-efficacy Our hypothesis is that the asthma education intervention will significantly improve asthma knowledge and asthma self-efficacy at 1 month post-intervention as compared to controls.
