An Effectiveness and Safety Study of AQUAVAN® Injection (Fospropofol Disodium) for Sedation During Flexible Bronchoscopy

Very often patients receive medication before a diagnostic, therapeutic, or surgical procedure to help them relax, keep them calm, and to relieve them from pain. This is called procedural sedation. During procedural (mild-to-moderate) sedation, a patient is first given a pain-relief medication (analgesic) and then a medication to help him/her relax and keep him/her calm (sedative). Propofol is the drug commonly used for sedation because it releases immediately into the blood stream and causes fast sedation. AQUAVAN (fospropofol disodium) is made as a slow release version of propofol with a longer duration of effect.

Effect of a Modified Propofol Preparation on Injection Pain During Induction of Anesthesia in Children

The Efficacy of Isocapnic Hyperpnoea to Accelerate Recovery After General Anesthesia With Sevoflurane

The twilight phase between being asleep and awake during recovery from anesthesia is a precarious time fraught with risks to the post-operative patient. Hyperventilation accelerates the elimination of inhaled anesthetics but reduces their CO2 blood concentrations which delays their resumption of spontaneous breathing. We previously showed that our method of hyperventilation without affecting the CO2 concentration--which we call IH--accelerates the rate of emergence from anesthesia with isoflurane. In this study we will study the effect of IH on the rate of emergence from Sevoflurane anesthesia.

To assess the potential benefits on mechanical ventilation plateau pressure of pressure controlled mode versus volume controlled mode for laparoscopic bariatric surgery in obese patients (BMI > 35). High plateau pressures encountered in obese patients due to their reduced pulmonary compliance could be lowered using pressure controlled mechanical ventilation.

Nerve block anaesthesia is wildly practised in France, avoiding general anaesthesia in a number of cases and producing excellent post-operative analgesia in trauma and orthopaedic surgeries. Even realised by experimented anaesthetists, 5-15% of failures and rare complications (such as vascular puncture, paresthesia, systemic local anaesthetic toxicity, epidural and spinal anaesthesia, neuropathy) are noticed. The aim of the study is the evaluation of an ultrasound-guidance technique in the four predetermined blocks and the incidence of their complications.

The Effect of N2O Administration on Arterial Oxygenation

Nitrous oxide is a standard part of most anaesthetic breathing mixtures. It has often been assumed that it reduces the amount of oxygen reaching the lower parts of the lung. However the results of previous studies and of some computer modelling suggests the opposite may be true, and that oxygen levels in the blood are actually higher with nitrous oxide. This study seeks to determine whether nitrous oxide increases or decreases blood oxygen levels in anaesthetized patients.

Ketamine Versus Fentanyl as an Adjunct to Propofol-Assisted Emergency Department Procedural Sedation

We, the investigators at Queen's University, propose to conduct a randomized, double-blind, feasibility trial comparing low-dose ketamine versus fentanyl as adjuncts to Emergency Department procedural sedation with propofol. The outcomes of interest will be safety, with respect to hemodynamic and respiratory adverse effects, as well as efficacy, with respect to adequacy of sedation and analgesia, recovery profiles and patient/physician satisfaction. Our hypothesis, based on a review of existing anesthesia literature, is that low-dose ketamine may be a safer and more efficacious alternative to fentanyl when used as an adjunct to propofol-assisted procedural sedation.

A Study to Determine the Dose Requirements of Rocuronium Bromide (Zemuron®) in Pediatric and Adolescent Subjects (21048)(COMPLETED)(P05797)

The primary purpose of this study is to determine the dose requirements of rocuronium bromide when administered as a bolus dose (a single, large dose) for intubation (insertion of a tube through the nose or mouth into the trachea to provide artificial ventilation) and when administered by either continuous infusion or bolus doses for maintenance of muscle relaxation in term neonates (birth to <28 days old), infants (28 days to <=3 months) and toddlers (>3 months to <=2 years), children (2 years to less than or equal to 11 years of age), and adolescents (>11 years to less than or equal to 17 years of age).

A Study to Compare Different Intubating Doses of Zemuron in Pediatric and Adolescent Subjects Under General Anesthesia

The primary purpose of this study is to evaluate the time course of muscle relaxation after administration of three different single intravenous bolus doses of rocuronium bromide for intubation (insertion of a tube through the nose or mouth into the trachea to provide artificial ventilation) in term neonates (birth to <28 days old), infants (28 days to <=3 months) and toddlers (>3 months to <=2 years), children (2 years to less than or equal to 11 years of age), and adolescents (>11 years to less than or equal to 17 years of age). Subjects in each of the age groups will be randomized to one of 3 Zemuron® doses: 0.45 mg/kg, 0.6 mg/kg, or 1.0 mg/kg.
