Filter by:Anemia affects between 20 and 50 % of women in the postpartum period. It is associated with several adverse health consequences, such as impaired physical work capacity, deficits in cognitive function and mood, reduced immune function and reduced duration of breastfeeding. Postpartum anemia has also been shown to be a major risk factor for postpartum depression and to significantly disrupt maternal-infant interactions. Iron deficiency is the principal cause of anemia after delivery. Oral iron supplementation with ferrous sulfate has been considered the standard of care with blood transfusion reserved for more severe or symptomatic cases. In the last decade, two new intravenous iron compounds have been registered for clinical use: ferric carboxymaltose (Iroprem®) and iron isomaltoside (Monofer®). No study to date compared efficacy of iron carboxymaltose to iron isomaltoside for treatment of postpartum anemia. The objective of the study is to compare efficacy of intravenous iron carboxymaltose to intravenous iron isomaltoside and oral iron sulphate for treatment of postpartum anemia.
Severe and very severe aplastic anemia are life threatening disorders for which allogeneic stem cell transplant is only curative treatment. However, matched sibling donor (MSD) is available in only 25-35% cases. Pakistan has a population of around 203 million but there is no donor registry available so there is no option available for matched unrelated donor (MUD) transplants . Haploidentical transplant represents only curative option for patients lacking MSD. Protocols involving post transplant cyclophosphamide require Total body irradiation (TBI) and utilize peripheral blood stem cell(PBSC) as graft source. TBI is not available in most of transplant centres across Pakistan due to lack of availability , cost and lack of expertise. The investigators have conceived a novel TBI free conditioning regimen to be used for haplo-identical Hemtopoeitic stem cell transplant in acquired aplastic anemia patients
This study will 1) Evaluate the prevalence of elevated (conditional or abnormal) transcranial Doppler (TCD) velocities in a cross-sectional analysis of children with Sickle Cell Anemia (SCA) living in Tanzania; 2) Obtain longitudinal data on TCD velocities in this population; and 3) Measure the effects of hydroxyurea therapy on TCD velocities and associated primary stroke risk.
Good nutritional status among adolescents is a window of opportunity to produce healthy adults or pregnant individuals. Modifying the dietary habits during adolescent girls may be a sustainable approach to ensure good nutritional status among population because those habits tend to stay for a life time. Over many years, there has much effort to overcome anemia. Iron supplementation and fortification have been the most popular and convenient strategies to combat anemia. However, there has not much success due to the high still prevalence of anemia among children and women reproductive age. Food-based approach has been defined as one of the most effective programs to combat or reduce the prevalence of anemia. In the meantime, food based recommendations (FBR) formulation through linear programming (LP) approach has been found to be more effective than the traditional method of developing FBRs called "trial and error". LP approach allows us to develop optimized diet for target population with addition to detect the nutrient problem in specific region. This study therefore aims to identify the nutrient problems in the community, to develop optimized FBR employing the LP approach and to assess effect of nutrition education using optimized FBR in order to improve the nutritional and hemoglobin status among adolescent schoolgirls in rural Malang City. This study was conducted in several phases: 1) cross-sectional study 2) intervention study. Cross-sectional study was aimed to formulate optimized food based recommendations using linear programming. Intervention study was performed during 20 weeks with Remaja ASIK as the tagline which means Active, Healthy, Smart, and Creative. Adolescent schoolgirls aged 14-18 years was the subject of this study and 496 subjects were selected, including 152 for first phase and 344 for third phase. In addition, selected school based on inclusion criteria: 1) not boarding schools; and 2) having large number of students. In doing data collection, we collected socioecodemoghraphic data, anthropometry, biochemical data, dietary data, and cogitive performance.
Study is conducted to assess the prevalence and structure of comorbidity among patients undergoing abdominal surgery and produce the stratification of the risk of postoperative complications by identifying independent predictors for its development.
This study aims to compare the efficacy of lactoferrin versus iron supplementation versus two combined supplementation on iron deficiency anemia in female medical Ain Shams students by using iron profile.
This study tests the hypothesis that IV iron sucrose infusions given to iron deficient ovarian cancer patients prior to debulking surgery can improve pre-operative iron stores and decrease transfusion of packed red blood cells in the peri-operative period. 21 participants at least 18 years of age with epithelial ovarian cancer of any stage requiring neoadjuvant chemotherapy and surgery will be enrolled. Participants will be on study for a period of up to 3 months.
The massive scale-up of Long Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLIN) has led to a major reduction in malaria burden (up to 50%) in many sub-Saharan African countries. This progress is threatened by the wide scale selection of insecticide resistant malaria vectors. New types of LLIN combining a mixture of two insecticides have been developed to control resistant mosquitoes. The efficacy of two bi-treated LLIN are compared to a standard LLIN in a three-arm, single blinded, cluster-randomized trial in Cove, Benin. The arms are; 1/ Royal Guard, a net combining pyriproxyfen (PPF), which is known to disrupt female reproduction and fertility of eggs, and the pyrethroid alpha-cypermethrin, 2/Interceptor G2, LLIN incorporating a mixture of two adulticides with different modes of action; chlorfenapyr and a pyrethroid (alpha-cypermethrin), and 3/ The control arm: Interceptor, a standard LLIN treated with alpha-cypermethrin. The primary outcome of the trial will be malaria case incidence in children aged 6 months to 10 years.
This is a single center, open label Phase 1 clinical trial in normal adult subjects to assess safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics of HBI-002, an orally administered liquid containing carbon monoxide (CO), with single ascending doses (SAD), followed by multiple dose with doses daily for 7 days.
Perioperative anemia is very common in patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA). This study retrospectively analyzes the use of rHuEPO and iron sucrose in patients undergoing total hip and knee arthroplasty in order to observe the short-term efficacy and safety of rHuEPO and iron sucrose.
