Filter by:This is a randomized, parallel-group, placebo-controlled, clinical trial in middle-aged and older male and female subjects from Ohio. Subjects will take an over-the-counter dietary supplement or a placebo for 12 weeks. Outcome measures will include body weight, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, standard blood chemistries (e.g. chemistry panel, lipid panel, CBC with differential), changes in mood, vitality, energy, fatigue, productivity, digestive wellness (via anchored Visual Analogue Scales).
We need better tools to both enhance brain health and improve cognitive performance in healthy brain aging so that it can be delayed, reduced, or even reversed. The present proposal is designed to evaluate the pairing of cognitive training with a non-invasive neurostimulation technology that has shown promise in both increasing neuroplasticity and in enhancing cognitive performance, transcutaneous vagal nerve stimulation (tVNS).
We conducted a randomised, placebo-controlled, double blind, cross-over, trial to examine the short-term effect of concentrated beetroot juice on vascular outcomes in a young (18-35 years) and older group (55-75 years). The study included a run-in period of one day preceding the test day. A wash-out period of at least 7 days was implemented to ensure to avoid a carry-over effect of the interventions.
Most older people want to stay at home as long as possible. Effective self-management for people losing autonomy depends on reliable monitoring of their mobility, health and safety and active implication in decision-making. New technologies have the potential to provide information about changing patterns that reflect changing care needs. This information could help older adults, caregivers and health professionals to participate in decision-making about housing options when a change in living environment needs to be considered.
Aging is the number one risk factor for the majority of chronic diseases. There are no pharmaceutical treatments to slow aging and prolong healthspan. The anti-diabetic drug metformin is considered a likely pharmaceutical candidate to slow aging. In this study, the investigators hypothesize that metformin treatment in subjects free of type 2 diabetes will improve insulin sensitivity and glucoregulation in insulin resistant individuals, but will decrease insulin sensitivity and glucoregulation in insulin sensitive subjects. Further, the investigators hypothesize that long-term metformin treatment will remodel mitochondria in a way that decreases mitochondrial function in subjects that are insulin sensitive, but improves mitochondrial function in subjects that are insulin resistant. The investigators will use a dual-site, 12- week drug intervention trial performed in a double-blind, placebo-controlled manner on 148 subjects recruited from two separate sites (Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation (OMRF) and University of Wisconsin-Madison (UWM)). After consent and initial subject screening for chronic disease, subjects will be stratified to insulin sensitive (IS) or insulin resistant (IR) groups. Over a 12- week intervention, half of each group will take metformin and half will take a placebo. Pre- and post--intervention, subjects will complete a series of procedures to assess insulin sensitivity, glucose regulation, and biomarkers of aging. The same subjects will provide a skeletal muscle biopsy pre-- and post-intervention to assess the change in mitochondrial function and mitochondrial remodeling with and without metformin treatment. By completion of this project, the investigators expect to provide evidence that helps further delineate who may benefit from metformin treatment to slow aging.
Two of the most effective lifestyle-based approaches to reduce the risk of adverse health events and enhance quality of life with aging are exercise and a healthy diet. Currently, the Canadian recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for protein is 0.8 g/kg/day, however, several expert groups have advocated for a higher RDA of protein (~1.2 g/kg/day), along with more evenly distributed daily consumption, in older persons. Eggs are considered a nutrient-rich protein source but have recently been scrutinized. This study will compare a high-protein, egg-containing diet and a high-protein, non-egg diet in healthy older persons.
Aging decreases the physical fitness levels in living beings. The environmental factors also have a major effect on the physical fitness levels. The objective of this study was to compare the physical fitness levels of nursing home residents and community-dwelling elderly people. This study employed 118 participants, who consisted of nursing home residents and community-dwelling elderly people. The physical fitness levels of the elderly people were measured by Senior Fitness Test. The physical fitness levels of the elderly people were measured by Senior Fitness Test. Chair stand test, arm curl test, 2-minute step test, chair sit and reach test, back-scratch test, 8-foot up and go test and body mass index were measured.
This study sought to determine if the number of meals per day with an adequate protein content (defined as eating >30 g protein or >0.4 g protein/kg body mass each) is associated with presenting physical disability in Mexican adults aged 60 years and older. Physical disability was evaluated with self-reported questionnaires for different activities of daily living.
Single Center, Double Blind, Placebo- Controlled Study of 20 subjects with 10 active drug/10 placebo Standardized baseline/pre-treatments and follow-up images will be taken. Subjects will receive injection of either study drug or placebo to the Depressor Anguli Oris. Follow ups will occur at 2 weeks, 4 weeks, and 12 weeks.
Microgreens are an emerging horticultural food crop with potential to improve human health. Previous research suggests they have broad consumer acceptance and that the micronutrient and bioactive compound levels are higher than that of their mature counterparts. To date, no studies have explored the feasibility of microgreen consumption, gastrointestinal tolerance of microgreen consumption, or their potential health impacts in humans. Therefore, the overall goal of this study is to explore the feasibility and acceptability of daily microgreen consumption, gastrointestinal tolerability, and potential health impacts of red cabbage and red beet microgreens in healthy middle-aged/older men and postmenopausal women - a population inherently at risk for chronic disease, e.g. cardiovascular disease.
