Filter by:The investigators propose to test the effects of an 8-week supervised, site-based, group yoga intervention on cognition and functional fitness in older adults. The SAY Exercise study will compare the yoga group to a stretching group to determine if the program improves attention and cognition, reduces functional limitations, enhances functional performance in everyday activities, as well as psychological health in sedentary older adults between 55-80 years of age. The investigators also propose to assess heart rate variability using a 3-lead EKG and salivary cortisol levels to understand the moderators of the yoga-cognition relationship.
The investigators will do the study in two phases. The first phase will be a pilot study on up to 18 participants [patients 60 years or older with coronary artery disease (CAD) undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) or coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) or patients who are eligible to undergo and participate in cardiac rehabilitation (CR)]; up to 6 participants each will be given oral daily rapamycin (0.5, 1, and 2mg) dose for the duration of CR. Baseline and follow-up data will be collected for age-associated impairment (AAI): frailty (primary endpoint) and quality of life (QOL),senescent-associated secretory phenotype (SASP)and abdominal/thigh subcutaneous adipose biopsy for measurement of adipocyte mitochondrial DNA copy number and to quantitate the number of senescent preadipocytes. Safety of rapamycin will be assessed by periodic clinical follow-up, blood draws, and serum rapamycin levels. Following completion of the pilot phase, the data will be analyzed. If favorable changes are noted in the SASP or AAI, the investigators will start a phase 2 randomized trial. Second phase: In a prospective, randomized, clinical trial design, patients 60 years or older will be randomized at the time of CR to a standardized exercise protocol, or exercise protocol with the addition of low-dose rapamycin to test the hypothesis whether low-dose rapamycin (demonstrated in the pilot trial to improve SASP/AAI) will improve measures of AAI, SASP, or findings on the fat biopsy as compared to exercise alone. The null hypotheses are that there is no improvement with rapamycin in measures of AAI or SASP.
Higher rates of mortality have been found both in short sleepers (< 6 hr/night) and long sleepers (> 8 hr/night), but there has been little experimental investigation of the effects of chronic, moderate sleep loss in long or average sleepers. Some scientists argue that older adults might be particularly vulnerable to negative effects of sleep loss, whereas other scientists argue that many older adults spend too much time in bed, and that moderate reduction of time-in-bed could help increase the quality of their sleep, and could even promote health and longevity, particularly in long sleepers. At 4 sites across the US, we will conduct a large (200 people), randomized, controlled, 5- year study to examine whether a 1-hour reduction of time spent in bed for 12 weeks has negative or positive effects on multiple health-related outcomes, including inflammation, sleepiness, body weight, mood, glucose regulation, quality of life, incidence of illness, and incidence of automobile accidents in older long sleepers as compared to older average sleepers.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of aging and weight loss on iron status and immune response in obese women. Iron deficiency and immune impairment are two of the numerous complications of obesity. The central hypothesis is that obesity-induced inflammation causes lower iron status through decreased iron absorption and availability in young and older obese women. Furthermore, the investigators hypothesize that this can be corrected with weight loss in both young and older obese women.
This research is being done to determine whether transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can improve certain mental abilities. In this research, a 9 volt battery is used to deliver very weak electrical current to the surface of the scalp while participants complete cognitive tasks. Our aim is to find out whether tDCS will improve task performance in adults over the age of 55.
Ageing is associated with a reduction of physical activity, movement efficiency, and quality of sleep. This leads to reduced health and well being in elderly subjects. Exercise training can increase movement efficiency and quality of sleep. Objectives: 1. Laboratory validation test of body acceleration based indexes for movement efficiency and quality of sleep; 2. Cross-sectional analysis to assess relations between these indexes and age; 3. Intervention study to assess the effect of exercise training on daily life movement efficiency and quality of sleep in ageing subjects 45 healthy human volunteers, age 50-83 yr, BMI 20-30 kg/m2 are divided in control or intervention group. Subjects that will have practiced fitness activities in the previous year, as well as pregnant or lactating women, will be excluded.
- Although aging process appears to be generally characterized, investigators have been paid much attention to the specific target molecules, which leads to discover the clinical markers of the senescence. The present study is to investigate the clinical and biological profile of cognitive decline and functional cardiac senescence in healthy middle aged and elderly Korean volunteers. - This study was conducted as a cross-sectional, single-center, comparative clinical study. - Each volunteer was given informed consent for checking cognition and cardiac function. Blood and urine samples were collected to analyze genome, proteome, and metabolome to assess cognition and cardiac function of its muscle enzymes.
In the present study, the effects of 5 days of lower limb immobilization with or without twice-daily protein supplementation on muscle mass and muscle fiber characteristics will be determined. A young group will be included to compare the changes in muscle mass and muscle fiber characteristics between young and old men.
The goal of this study is to understand the effects of muscle strengthening and stretching exercise intervention on isometric muscle strength, joint flexibility and running biomechanical patterns in older recreational runners. To do so, the subjects will be assessed before and after they engage in a 8-week exercise intervention program.
This study follows the results of the COMPALICLAMP study (NCT00951392) where the investigators showed a differential expression of sirtuins protein isoforms, Sirt6, in muscle depending on the quality of aging. The investigators seek to confirm this difference in expression level of circulating leukocytes on a larger sample.
