Effects of Blueberry on Cognition and Mobility in Older Adults

Effect of Aerobic Interval Training on Cardiovascular Function in Aging

Study objectives: 1. To compare cardiovascular function in older compared to young healthy adults. 2. To compare the effect of 8 weeks of aerobic interval training vs. continuous moderate exercise on cardiovascular function in healthy older adults. Hypotheses: 1. Compared to young adults, older adults will have lower cardiovascular function. 2. Compared to continuous moderate intensity exercise training, interval training will be more effective in improving cardiovascular function in older adults.

Glutathione and Fuel Oxidation in Aging

Glutathione is an important antioxidant protein which protects cells from harmful oxidative stress. Elderly humans are known to have elevated oxidative stress and deficiency of glutathione, but it is not known whether there is deficient synthesis of glutathione in muscle tissue of elderly humans. Mitochondria are engines of cells where food consumed is burned to make energy. Under normal conditions the fuel of choice in the fasted state is fat, but fasted elderly humans are not able to oxidize fat as well as healthy young humans. Elderly humans also have the highest incidence and prevalence of being overweight and obese, and have increased storage of fat in liver and muscle. This study will help determine whether 1. elderly humans have diminished synthesis of glutathione in the skeletal muscle, and whether this can be improved by supplementing cysteine and glycine (and not an isonitrogenous placebo) in the diet; 2. improving muscle glutathione concentrations can also improve fuel oxidation in aging; 3. improvement of intracellular glutathione concentrations will be associated with a change in total body fat content

Once-Daily Oral Dose of BeneFlax to Healthy Older Adults

The investigators are investigating whether the flax lignan, secoisolariciresinol diglucoside, decreases oxidative stress and inflammation. The flax seed lignan is believed to be broken down in the body to produce the health benefits of flax. Flax lignan is separated from the whole flax seed as this compound is believed to have health effects. Decreasing oxidative stress and inflammation should improve a number of the problems associated with aging. This intervention consists of 600 milligrams of the flax lignan SDG daily or an equivalent amount of whey protein. The investigators are comparing lignan to a placebo (whey powder) to examine whether a dietary intervention (i.e. flax seed containing lignan) might decrease oxidative stress and inflammation.

Effects of Exercise Intervention on Aging-related Motor Decline

The purpose of this research study is to test whether differing levels of physical fitness affects patterns of motor dexterity and brain activity that have been shown to differ due to aging. Testing will take place at the Atlanta VA Medical Center and at Emory University. Participants will be healthy adults within the target age range of 60-85 for the study. The study will require multiple visits over 15 months. There will be about 64 people volunteering for this study.
