Filter by:Postural deformity and postural instability that occur with aging are risk factors for falling. In the literature, there are many scales that evaluate balance and functional performance in older adults. However there is no validity and reliability study of Dubousset Function Test developed to evaluate balance and functional performance of older adults. For this reason, the aim of study is to examine the validity and reliability of Dubousset Function Test in older adults.
Introduction: Poor sleep quality is common in most older adults. Because of the progressive aging of the population in Spain, there are more and more nursing-home and day centers, which give care to older adults. However, the attention focused on some difficulty related to sleep has not been thoroughly investigated. The use of wearable devices, which measure some parameters such as the sleep stages, can help to determine the influence of quality sleep in the health state among nursing-home residents. Objective: To analyze the sleep quality and its influence on the daily life of nursing-home residents through the use of assessment tools and Xiaomi MiBand 2. Methods and analysis: This is an observational and analytical study whose objective is the observation and registration of variables of a determined population without the intervention of the researcher and establishing relations between association variables and causality. It is also considered as longitudinal since the follow-up of some of the characteristics of the population will be performed during a period of time. The study is set in a nursing-home in A Coruña (Spain). Xiaomi MiBand 2 will be used to measure biomedical parameters and different assessment tools will be administered to participants for evaluating their sleep quality, cognitive state, and daily functioning. For the statistical analysis, T-Test and ANOVA analysis will be used to compare the means between variables. Also, a Chi-Square test will be used to study the association of qualitative variables. Finally, a multivariate analysis of logistic regression will be performed to determine the variables associated with the presence of the dichotomous variable of interest.
One-third of Canadians will be older adults (>65y) by 2050. Thus, healthy aging is a public health priority. Many older adult health promoting interventions have been implemented, yet few were scaled-up and sustained. Choose to Move (CTM) is an effective, adaptable, community-based health promotion program for older adults. CTM, co-created with government and community stakeholders, has been scaled-up across British Columbia (BC) using a phased approach (2015-2021). The investigators evaluated the impact of CTM on the health of seniors who participated and the results were extremely positive: CTM increased mobility, physical activity, social connectedness and improved mental health indicators like loneliness. When these outcomes were assessed again, one year after the end of CTM, these improvements had diminished. In this trial the investigators aim to determine if health benefits of CTM can be maintained by providing ongoing support to CTM participants. Booster interventions have been defined as "brief contacts beyond the main part of the intervention to reinforce previous intervention content" (Fjeldsoe et al., 2011, p. 601). Choose to Move - Next Steps (CTM-NS) is a two-year intervention where participants who recently completed CTM will receive different doses of a 'booster' program. Specifically, participants will be randomly allocated to virtual group meetings on a monthly (study arm 1; high dose) or quarterly (study arm 2; low dose) basis. Group meetings will be facilitated by an Activity Coach. Objectives: The investigators will conduct 1) impact, 2) implementation, and 3) economic evaluations of CTM-NS across 24 months. Hypotheses: For objective 1, the investigators hypothesize that improvements in older adult participant outcomes (primary outcome: mobility; secondary outcomes: physical activity, loneliness, social isolation, social connectedness, sitting time, screen time, social network, health status) obtained during CTM will be maintained over the 2 year CTM-NS study. Participants in the monthly group meetings (study arm 1) will maintain benefits to a greater degree than participants in the quarterly group meetings (study arm 2). Objectives 2 and 3 are descriptive and therefore have no hypotheses.
In a worldwide context of accelerated demographic aging, traumatic brain injury (TBI) in older adults has become a public health problem. TBI incidence grows following an exponential curve as people get older, increasing the occurrence of TBI in ageing individuals. Rehabilitation programs used in clinical settings have generally been developed for younger adults, and their efficacy with older adults who sustain a TBI has not been evaluated. The investigators have tailored a modular cognitive rehabilitation program for individuals who sustain a TBI in older adulthood, the Cognitive Enrichment Program (CEP), by adapting approaches which have shown to be effective in normal ageing and with other neurological conditions. The aim of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the CEP in adults having sustained a TBI during later adulthood. Specific objectives are to evaluate the effectiveness on memory, executive functions, psychological well-being and daily life activities using psychometric tests, self-reported questionnaires, and daily life-like tasks. The investigators hypothesize that memory and executive functions training included in the CEP will result in an improvement in both psychometric and self-reported scores in a trained group of older individuals with TBI, whereas this will not be the case for a comparable TBI group who did not receive the CEP intervention.
The COcoa Supplement and Multivitamin Outcomes Study (COSMOS; NCT02422745) is a randomized clinical trial of cocoa extract supplement (containing a total of 500 mg/d flavanols, including 80 mg (-)-epicatechin), and/or a standard multivitamin supplement to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer among men aged 60 years and older and women aged 65 years and older. This ancillary study (COSMOS Web) is being conducted among a subset of participants in COSMOS and will examine whether the cocoa extract supplements affects cognitive function in older adults.
Theater is a complex, multi-component performing art. On stage, actors not only need to memorize the script, but also be able to portray emotion and feeling through movement and move in whichever manner is deemed appropriate by the script. Acting therefore requires as much movement as it does vocalization. As training exercises in theater naturally involve boosting physical, cognitive and affective function, and social relationships, theater experience can be used to promote health and wellness. Over the last two decades, there has been an increase in the use of theater to promote health and wellness among older adults. Thus, the overall aim of this project is to evaluate the therapeutic benefits of a 10-week theory-based theater program on physical functioning and emotional stress among older adults. Hypothesis #1: Older adults residing in subsidized housing who participate in a theory-based theater program will demonstrate better physical functioning, and reduction in emotional stress than wait-list controls at the conclusion of a 10-week theater program. Hypothesis #2: The positive impact of the theater program on the residents' improved physical functioning and stress level will be maintained at 3-month follow-up.
With population aging, the number of older persons with cognitive impairments increases. Literature support the effectiveness of a lifestyle approach to promote the health of persons with cognitive impairment, as well as a Lifestyle Redesign intervention to improve the general health and quality of life of frail older adults. The investigators propose to combine a multi-modal cognitive intervention and lifestyle redesign approach to improve the cognitive health of older persons with cognitive impairments.
