Phage Therapy for the Treatment of Urinary Tract Infection

This is a single-patient, phase I/II clinical trial that aims to evaluate the potential of bacteriophage therapy to treat and prevent the recurrence of a drug-resistant urinary tract infection with serious long-term effects. This study will follow a minimally invasive phage therapy approach consisting of oral, topical (opening of the urethra) and bladder installations of a 3-phage cocktail comprised of HP3, HP3.1 and ES19.

Dissemination and Implementation of a Videoconference Antimicrobial Stewardship Team

Antimicrobial-resistant and healthcare-associated pathogens are a global health threat. The goals of antimicrobial stewardship are to minimize unnecessary and inappropriate antimicrobial use as a means to combat antimicrobial resistance. Previously, the investigators implemented a Videoconference Antimicrobial Stewardship Team (VAST) at 2 VA Medical Centers (VAMCs), using telehealth to connect clinicians at a rural VAMC to a geographically distant infectious disease expert Both VASTs successfully decreased overall antibiotic use in acute and long-term care units. This project will expand the VAST approach to other VAMCs and test the hypothesis that quarterly reports that quantify facility-level antibiotic use will enhance the efficacy of VASTs to support antimicrobial stewardship. This work will directly increase access to antimicrobial stewardship consultation at rural VA facilities, which are often underserved by infectious disease expertise.

The Effect of Nursing Interventions for Clean Intermittent Catheterization Caregivers and Child

In neurogenic or non-neurogenic bladder disorders, the removal process after the catheter is inserted into the bladder and the urine has been drained is called Clean intermittent catheterization (CIC). After 1972, Lapides started using CIC in the treatment of people who cannot empty their bladder on their own. The decision to apply CIC to patients is made by the doctor. After CIC application, patients's increase body image, self-confidence development and quality of life. CIC application to children is done by caregivers. CIC use has negative effects as well as positive effects for patients. If the caregiver has not received enough training about CIC application and does not pay attention to CIC performing hours and procedure steps, urinary tract infection can be seen in children. Common urinary tract infections in children cause permanent kidney damage. Studies conducted to prevent complications that may develop in patients using CIC emphasize the importance of patient education. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of based on the roy adaptation theory supported android phone application CIC training, on the knowledge / skills, coping / adaptation and anxiety level of caregivers and the development of urinary tract infection in children.

Participants will undergo daily gentamicin bladder instillations to determine if its use will reduce the rate of symptomatic urinary tract infections (UTIs) as well as the use of oral and intravenous antibiotics in adults with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI) who have recurrent UTIs. Participants are randomized into one of three groups: 1) Gentamicin and saline instillation 2) Saline only instillation 3) Standard of care, no instillation.

Urinary Tract Infections Rates Using 50% Dextrose Plus Washout Versus Normal Saline as Cystoscopy Fluid

Our study will compare the rates of postoperative urinary tract infections (UTI) between patients who undergo cystoscopy using 50% dextrose injection plus bladder washout versus normal saline after hysterectomy for benign indications. Primary outcome will be rates of urinary tract infections at 6-9 days post-operatively. This will be defined as a urine culture yielding greater than 100,000 gram-negative colony-forming units per milliliter.
