Assisting Smokers to Switch to a JUUL E-Cigarette by Devaluing Combustible Cigarettes

This study will evaluate a reward devaluation strategy in which smokers use the JUUL e-cigarette immediately before any combustible cigarettes (CCs) are smoked. This procedure is predicted to accomplish three goals: 1) the rewarding effects of CC will be disrupted because subjects will already have attained fairly high peak nicotine concentrations immediately before smoking the cigarette. This reduces the rewarding effect of smoking, in part from receptor desensitization that occurs following nicotine exposure, which reduces the response to a subsequent dose of nicotine, and in part from satiating the drive to smoke; 2) the use of the JUUL will become associated with the same cues that elicit smoking, thereby promoting the substitution of JUUL use for CC use; and 3) ad libitum nicotine intake from the JUUL and its rewarding effects will be maximized because, unlike CC, they will be experienced after a period of nicotine deprivation. Thus, despite a lower per-puff nicotine dose relative to CC, the pharmacologic impact and reinforcing effect will be maximized. The study will evaluate two flavors (Mint and Virginia Tobacco), randomly assigned, to determine if flavor assignment (similar to the subjects' usual brand of CC or different than the subjects usual brand CC) has an effect on the success of this reconditioning procedure.

Evaluation of Efficacy of Different Methods of Tobacco Cessation Interventions Among BEST Employees in Mumbai

Tobacco use is the single most preventable cause of premature adult death globally. It is one of the major causes of death and disease in India, accounting for nearly 0.9 million deaths every year. Bombay Electric Supply and Transport (BEST), one of the biggest public transport undertaking in Mumbai City, has imposed a ban on tobacco use in public transport buses and under Motor Vehicle Act has empowered the drivers and bus conductors to take suitable action against commuters found to be using tobacco. However in addition to commuters using tobacco in the BEST premises, large number of bus drivers and conductors are known to use tobacco on the job. There are various approaches to a tobacco cessation programme, like behavioural therapy, pharmacotherapy, providing self help material, telephone counseling, quit lines etc. Hence in terms of the workplace environment, understanding the factors leading to tobacco use maintenance and the effective approaches for cessation is of critical importance for formulating workplace tobacco prevention and cessation interventions that are applicable to transport work employee settings. The success of these methods needs to be comparatively evaluated among the different forms of tobacco users. Hence, the present study will be undertaken with the following objectives:

Effectiveness of Bupropion for Treating Nicotine Dependence in Young People

Little is known about the best ways to help young people stop smoking. Bupropion (a medication marketed as Wellbutrin or Zyban) has proved helpful in treating adult smokers. The purpose of this study is to determine if bupropion is also effective in treating smokers between the ages of 12 and 25 years old. This study also compares the effectiveness of bupropion used as a supplement to behavioral treatment versus behavioral treatment used alone. In addition, the study evaluates whether hormonal response to stress measured prior to the start of treatment predicts whether individuals respond well to treatment with medication.
