Filter by:Patients with hemochromatosis or Thalassemia develop progressive tissue and organs damages secondary to iron overload. Iron overload can result both from transfusional hemosiderosis and excess gastrointestinal iron absorption. Iron deposition in the heart, liver, and multiple endocrine glands results in severe damage to these organs, with variable degrees of endocrine and organ failure. Although patients with iron overload often present endocrine disorders, the pathogenetic mechanisms underlying endocrinopathies are not completely clear. In particular it is not elucidated if the spectrum of endocrinopathies could change with advancing age. All endocrinological comorbidities can develop from a primary damage of the target gland, from pituitary secondary failure or from both. The aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence of endocrinological diseases in adult patients with iron overload due to β-thalassemia or hemochromatosis and their impact on well-being and quality of life. The study design is a prospective cross-sectional clinical study. All subjects enrolled will be evaluated for the endocrine diseases. The study protocol will include data collection from family and patients' history of diseases, physical examination, hormonal assessment for all endocrine axes and instrumental examinations. The results will provide evidence on the prevalence of endocrine diseases in patients with iron overload and will add information to characterize the type and the degree of endocrine deficiencies, and on the pathogenic mechanisms involved, in order to individualize diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety, tolerability, and efficacy of treatment with EDIT-301 in adult participants with Transfusion Dependent beta Thalassemia
The study hypothesis that treatment with Erythropoietin (EPO) combined with Human Erythropoietin (HUO) therapy will result in hematologic improvement in thalassemia intermedia patients. Second is to determine whether any of the following correlate with improved hematologic response: A decrease in hemolysis, as assayed by a decrease in LDH, compared to baseline levels, baseline Erythropoietin levels, baseline hemoglobin levels and baseline reticulocyte counts (or % circulating nucleated erythroblasts/100 WBCs). Goal: The aim is to assess the possibility of steady increase of hemoglobin levels in thalassemia intermedia patients by at least 1g/dl above baseline levels during therapy using Hydroxyurea and Erythropoietin, growth evaluation, quality of life (QoL) and decline transfusion requirements during study period. Also to report and compare adverse events with other published data regarding.
This is a multicenter observational case-control analysis lasting 12 months aimed at determining the prevalence of pulmonary hypertension (PAH) in patients with Thalassemia Major and Intermedia. The patients will be followed, treated and examined according to the best standard clinical practice dictated by the Italian Society for the study of Hemoglobinopathies (SITE), Thalassemia International Federation (TIF)and the Task Force for Diagnosis and Treatment of Pulmonary Hypertension of European Society of Cardiology (ESC); European Respiratory Society (ERS); International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT) guidelines.
The purpose of this study is to study the efficacy of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) on anaemic and cytopenic haematological disorders including myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), aplastic anaemia (AA), myelofibrosis (MF) and thalassemia intermedia who do not have or did not respond to available treatment options.
An Italian Multicentric randomized, open-label therapeutic trial evaluating the efficacy and safety of Neridronate in the treatment of Osteoporosis in patients with Thalassemia Major and Severe Thalassemia Intermedia. Efficacy and safety of the drug will be evaluated measuring at every visit this parameters: - haematological: Haemochrome - blood chemistry: creatinine, BUN, AST, ALT, Ca, P, proteins electrophoresis, total proteins. The prevalence of ectopic calcification and pseudoxantoma elasticum (PXE)-like syndrome and their follow-up will be evaluated at the beginning of the study vs 24 months through physical examination, abdominal echography and fundus oculi examination. During the trial other known risks factors for osteoporosis will be recorded, including prevalence and incidence of bone fractures and, if executed, Polimorphisms COLIA1. At the beginning of the study and at months 12 and 24 morphometry DXA will be performed to evaluate of the presence of bone deformities. Furthermore data regarding QOL and symptom pain will be evaluated trough administration of scale SF-36. At 12 months an intratrial analisis will be performed on efficacy and safety parameters in order to introduce possible amendments to the study design and to decide the prosecution of the trial During the trial all adverse events will be recorded
