Filter by:Internet addiction disorder (IAD) is an impulse-control disorder of Internet behavior in the absence of addictive substances. Exercise has been found to have significant advantages in improving the severity and depressive symptoms of IAD. The purpose of this study was to observe the efficacy of conventional exercise and tai chi in the treatment of Internet addiction and to observe the changes in each group. Subjects diagnosed with IAD were randomly assigned to the exercise group, the tai chi group, or the control group. The exercise group and tai chi group received conventional exercise and tai chi for 8 weeks. The Internet Addiction Test (IAT), the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), the Zung Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS), the Zung Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), and Fatigue Scale-14 (FS-14) were evaluated for all subjects at baseline and postintervention.
Sarcopenia has been defined as a disease which presented as low muscles strength, low muscle quantity or quality and low physical activity. The prevalence of sarcopenia is increasing with the age and it is also included in one of geriatric syndromes. Several criteria have been mentioned for diagnosis of sarcopenia, such as European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP)、Foundation for the National Institutes of Health Biomarkers Consortium Sarcopenia Project (FNIH) and Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS). In European, the prevalence rate of sarcopenia is 9.25-18%; 5-7% Canadian and 14.4% Taiwanese elders have been diagnosed as sarcopenia, respectively. The sarcopenia has been found its relationship with adverse outcomes of fall down, fracture, disability, and death. The cytokines and decline in anabolic hormones play a role in the pathogenesis of sarcopenia. Tai Chi exercise is one of Qigong and well-popular in Chinese population, and is helpful to integration of body movements. Tai Chi exercise is less complicated and emphasized people's awareness of self-care which presented the relationship between human and nature. Tai Chi exercise could improve muscle performance, balance and have the benefit for fall down prevention in the elders and patients with frailty. Furthermore, Tai Chi has been found that it also could improve the muscle power and power strength in sarcopenic elders by team training. Furthermore, immune makers of inflammation process have been noted their diminishments by Qigong intervention. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of Tai Chi exercise in sarcopenic elders through practicing at home. The differences of muscles strength, muscle quantity or quality and physical activity after interventions would be recorded and analyzed. The cytokines related to the sarcopenia process would also be sampled.
The standard of care for PTSD involves both psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy, but treatment resistance is common. The discovery of effective complementary treatment approaches would have major implications for patients with PTSD. Mindfulness meditation and related practices have been studied intensively in recent years for a variety of psychiatric illnesses, including depression, generalized anxiety disorder, and PTSD. Studies in PTSD suggest that mindful meditation holds promise. For example, mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) has shown effectiveness for reducing symptom severity and improving mental-health related quality of life in combat-exposed veterans and child survivors of sexual abuse. Mechanistically, mindfulness meditation appears to counteract the types of functional changes that have been identified in the brains of patients with PTSD. In particular, while PTSD symptoms are associated with decreased activation of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and increased amygdala activity, mindfulness meditation is associated with increased PFC activation and decreased amygdala activation. Other physiological effects of mindfulness meditation in patients with PTSD are not fully defined. However, available data suggest that it leads to a normalization of vagal tone and plasma cortisol levels, which are known to be abnormal in patients with chronic PTSD. Research utilizing validated and standardized pre- and post- PTSD outcome measures, in addition to pre- and post- physiologic variables such a vagal tone, plasma cortisol and catecholamine levels, may better the understandings of physiological effects of mindfulness medication.
Because of multiple system involvement, patients with Scleroderma have complaints such as fatigue, sleep disturbances, functional limitations, skin deformations, pain, swollen hands and joint pain. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of Tai Chi exercise program on trunk endurance, balance, sleep, fatigue, anxiety and depression in patients with scleroderma.
ENTAiER study is a multicentre randomized controlled trial to assess the efficacy and safety of eurythmy therapy and Tai Chi in comparison to standard care in chronically ill elderly patients with increased risk of falling. Subjects will be randomized to eurythmy therapy or Tai Chi or standard care alone. To investigate the changes in cardiovascular and sleep quality parameters under Eurythmy Therapy and Tai Chi in comparison to Standard Care in this trial, a substudy will be conducted only at the ARCIM Institute. The substudy will recruit enrolled participants from the ENTAiER trial to record various cardiovascular and sleep quality parameters. The aim is to compare changes in cardiovascular and sleep quality parameters under eurythmy therapy, Tai Chi and standard care alone in chronically ill elderly patients with increased risk of falling.
Tai Chi exercises have increasingly grown in popularity among older adults in the past decades. It has been well studied to its efficacies in proportion with the management of elderly fall prevention and mineral-structured bone density enhancement. Nevertheless, existing study sources do little exemplified a quantifiable measures of effects in patients suffer from osteoarthritis of knees being impacted from a routine performance of Tai Chi.
Spinocerebellar atrophy is the most common autosomal dominant inherited ataxia. There are over thirty subtypes, which characterize neurologic features differently. They all have obvious substantial cerebellar atrophies in image, and unstable gait、ataxia. In general a prevalence of about three cases per 100 000 people is assumed, but this may be an underestimate. Progressive neurologic degeneration, in about 10-20 years, will leads to disability or wheelchair-dependent. Accompanying with fatigue, downhill course of the disease often made patients depressive and hopeless. The recent review of researches concludes no effective therapy for the disease. The purpose of the investigator's study is to explore the Tai-chi exercise effect for spinocerebellar ataxia.
