Filter by:Introduction. Systemic lupus erythematosus is an autoimmune disease. The musculoskeletal system is affected in 90% of patients. The most common manifestations are myalgias, arthralgias and arthritis. Objective. To analyse the efficacy of an intervention using myofascial techniques and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. Methods. Randomised clinical study with 20 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, randomised to an experimental and control group. The intervention will last 4 weeks, with a periodicity of 2 weekly sessions of 50 minutes each. The intervention of the experimental group will consist of a protocol using myofascial and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation techniques. Expected results. Improvement of knee and ankle pain intensity, functional capacity, basic mobility skills, strength, balance, agility and fatigue.
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune and inflammatory disease. The pathogenesis of SLE results from interactions between genes, hormones, and the environment; however, the exact etiology is unknown. SLE can affect many organs and systems, including the musculoskeletal, hematological, renal, neuropsychiatric, cardiovascular and pulmonary systems, and skin. Non-specific general complaints such as malaise, fatigue, arthralgia, anxiety, depression, fever, and weight loss are evident at the onset of the disease and during the activation periods. Patients experience hopelessness due to the complexity of the symptoms and the chronic and progressive nature of the disease, and they experience deterioration in their quality of life due to the interaction of anxiety and depression findings with other symptoms. SLE is a difficult disease to manage because of the different organ and system involvement processes. In addition, these symptoms of the disease and the nature of chronic pain, including central sensitization, cause it to accompany a process that is affected by the mood of the person. Some patients present to a rheumatologist with mild symptoms, while others may present with severe, life-threatening symptoms. The onset of the disease before the age of 18 is defined as childhood onset (juvenile). Childhood-onset SLE accounts for approximately 1/5 of SLE patients. It is known that the main mechanism in the formation of the disease is the production of more than one autoantibody. Although childhood SLE (jSLE) appears to be basically the same disease with similar etiology, pathogenesis, and laboratory findings as in adults, there are differences in the frequency and severity of clinical manifestations. In this respect, the clearest finding is that children with SLE have greater disease severity and earlier disease-related organ damage than adults with SLE. Studies on the disease show that patients with jSLE have not only physical but also cognitive effects. The aim of our study is to examine the effects of exercises applied with a dual-task approach on patients' physical and cognitive status in jSLE cases.
People with inflammatory diseases treated with immune-suppressing medication are recommended to have regular blood-tests to monitor for potential side-effects of this treatment on their blood count, liver and kidneys. However, it is not clear that monitoring is needed as frequently as currently recommended in the long-term, with side-effects being rare after one year of treatment. A study is currently underway to determine the optimal blood-test monitoring strategy which is cost-effective but still safe. Any changes in the monitoring strategy must be acceptable to patients and the healthcare professionals (HCP) that treat them. This study aims to measure how often patients' with common inflammatory conditions on long-term immune suppressing medication attend their monitoring blood tests as currently recommended, and uncover patients' and HCP views and experiences of the current blood-test monitoring strategy, and the acceptability of potential changes to this in the future. Firstly, patients with an inflammatory condition on long-term immune suppressing treatment will be invited to complete a questionnaire which will ask about their demographic information, medical condition(s), immune-suppressing treatment, adherence to the monitoring blood tests and willingness to take part in an interview. Then, both patients and HCPs who care for such patients will be invited to take part in a single, semi-structured interview. Interviews will be face-to-face, by telephone or video-call, last up to one hour and digitally audio-recorded. Patient interviews will explore their perceptions of risk, benefits and experiences of current testing, and views on the new testing frequencies emerging from the study prior. HCP interviews will explore their perceptions of current testing including, the practicalities, usefulness, risks and benefits of the blood tests, and views on the new testing frequencies emerging from the study prior. The findings will shape the recommendations for a new monitoring strategy, ensuring it is acceptable to patients and HCPs.

This study aims to evaluate the rule of NMUS in detection of peripheral neuropathy in SLE patient and to correlate it to traditional neurophysiological studies, clinical signs and activity of SLE.
The aim of the study is to determine the prevalence of steroid-induced diabetes mellitus (SDM) among systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients and identify and assess the associated risk factors .
This study is investigating the development of a diagnostic test intended to predict flares in patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. Over a six-month period, the participant will donate blood samples for researchers to evaluate the types of proteins that are in their blood. During this time the participant will also visit a research physician to undergo a physical exam that will include an evaluation of the disease's level of activity. Questionnaires will be answered too, either via email, phone call, or a research app for android and iPhone devices. During this six-month period, if the participant experiences a lupus flare, they are strongly encouraged to visit the research physician to receive a complimentary medical evaluation.
The first phase of this pilot study will assess changes in quality of life at the end of a 16-week Mymee program in patients with moderate to severe SLE. The second phase will assess changes in healthcare utilization and cost over a one year period after program end.
