This phase II trial studies how well bevacizumab and atezolizumab with or without cobimetinib work in treating patients with untreated melanoma that has spread to the brain (brain metastases). Monoclonal antibodies, such as bevacizumab and atezolizumab, may interfere with the ability of tumor cells to grow and spread. Cobimetinib may stop the growth of tumor cells by blocking some of the enzymes needed for cell growth. It is not yet known if giving bevacizumab and atezolizumab with or without cobimetinib will work better in treating patients with melanoma brain metastases.
This randomized pilot clinical trial studies health care coach support in reducing acute care use and cost in patients with cancer. Health care coach support may help cancer patients to make decisions about their care that matches what is important to them with symptom management.
Freshly excised or freshly frozen tissue for Raman analysis will be obtained from a dermatology practice affiliated with UMCB. In the course of the routine removal of benign or malignant tumors in the office, skin cancer surgeons routinely check frozen sections to ensure adequate margins are obtained. Consent will be obtained from patients to provide freshly excised or freshly frozen leftover tissue obtained during Mohs surgery to be discarded after histological diagnosis. Freshly excised tissue will be measured at the time of excision before processing, while the freshly frozen tissue samples will be stored in a freezer at the Mohs clinic and transferred to the UT- Austin campus for spectroscopic analysis.
This is a pilot randomized controlled trial of an Internet-based skin cancer prevention intervention as compared to a standard of care control in 80 non-Hispanic white females ages 20-30.
The goal of this clinical research study is to learn if GSK2636771 given in combination with pembrolizumab can help to control the disease in patients with refractory (has not responded to treatment) metastatic melanoma. The safety of this drug combination will also be studied. This is an investigational study. Pembrolizumab is FDA approved and commercially available and FDA approved for the treatment of several types of cancer, including melanoma. GSK2636771 is not FDA approved or commercially available. It is currently being used for research purposes only. The study doctor can explain how the study drugs are designed to work. Up to 41 participants will be enrolled in this study. All will take part at MD Anderson.
The study's goal is to assess impact of preoperative acetaminophen and oral carbohydrate drinks on pain and functional status experienced by patients undergoing Mohs micrographic surgery for non-melanoma skin cancers. Patients are randomly assigned to receive standard of care or preoperative acetaminophen 1000 mg and Gatorade sports drinks 2 packets before surgery. Patients are then asked to rate their level of pain, anxiety, thirst, hunger, fatigue on a scale of 0-100 on day of surgery before surgery has started, after clearance of skin cancer, and at the end of the visit. Patients are contacted by phone 48 hours after their surgery to assess their maximum level of post-operative pain (rated from 0-100), usage of over the counter or prescribed pain medications, and presence of complications e.g. bleeding, infection, dehiscence. Differences in perioperative functional status and pain medication usage are compared between patients in control and intervention groups.
Toll-like receptors (TLRs) play a key role in the innate immune system. Toll-like receptor-4 (TLR4) in particular, appears to play a role in susceptibility to cancer. Of 44 identified SNPs (small nucleotide polymorphisms) in TLR4, the most common is an A-G substitution at nucleotide position +896, downstream of the cDNA start codon, a missense mutation which leads to an amino acid substitution Asp299Gly in the third exon of the TLR4 gene. Pre-clinical studies from our laboratory have shown an association of TLR4 with ultraviolet radiation induced skin cancer. Hence, in this study we will assess the pattern of TLR4 polymorphisms and susceptibility to skin cancer.
This pilot clinical trial studies how well acceptance and commitment therapy works in improving well-being in patients with stage III-IV cancer and their partners. Learning how to accept negative thoughts and feelings and how to live in the present without worrying about the future or past may improve coping skills in patients with stage III-IV cancer and their partners.
