Testing a Life Skills Application to Address Interpersonal Relationships in College (MKit)

This study utilizes implementation science principles to culturally adapt a pre-existing web-based application (WebApp) for use with college students. The ADAPT-ITT process will be utilized to adapt the WebApp to a diverse (race, ethnicity, gender/sexual identity) college population with a focus on life skills and holistic self-care as reinforcement to currently available primary prevention programming available to incoming students. The study hypothesis is that the adapted WebApp will be usable, acceptable, and students will be willing to use it as a reinforcement to current university primary prevention programming. The study team will also monitor retention of participants over the academic year. This is a repeat pilot test to evaluate changes implemented to the WebApp after the initial pilot during the 2017-2018 academic year.

Impact Assessment of the Rural Response System to Reduce Violence Against Women in Ghana

AIM: To assess the community level impact of the Gender Centre's Rural Response System (RRS) in reducing violence against women (VAW) in Ghana. METHODS: Design: An unmatched cluster randomised controlled trial with two arms i) Intervention arm- Receive Gender Centre's RRS /COMBAT package for communities as well as state agencies. Control arm - No intervention. Qualitative component Setting: Rural and urban communities in the Central Region of Ghana. i). Rural and urban communities in four (4) Districts located in the Central Region of Ghana. Two districts are along the Coast (Abura and Komenda) while the other two (Agona and Upper Denkyira) are inland districts. ii). State Agencies (DOVVSU/Police, CHRAJ, Social Welfare, and Health Services). Interventions: Carried out in two Districts - Agona district and Komenda district. Workings of the intervention arm will be facilitated by the Gender Studies and Human Rights Documentation Centre in Ghana. Sample size: A total of 3280 adults (1640 women and 1640 men) from 20 clusters per trial arm (approximately 82 households per cluster) will be recruited at baseline and again at post-intervention survey. Sampling format will be a community survey with independent samples design (i.e. in each community, the people surveyed at baseline may not necessarily be the same people who are surveyed at post intervention. Clusters refer to the selected localities and their participating communities in each district. Evaluation design: Pre-test all study participants with a standardized instrument then introduce the independent variable (intervention) to the experimental group while withholding it from the control group. After 24 months of intervention, post-test both groups with the same instrument and under the same conditions as the pretest (baseline). Compare the amount of change in dependent variable for both experimental and control groups. Data analysis: The data will be analysed by intention to treat. The past 12 months prevalence of IPV will be compared between arms in the study.

Preventing Sexual Violence Through a Comprehensive, Peer-led Initiative

The purpose of this multiple baseline study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a comprehensive youth-led sexual violence (SV) prevention program, Youth Voices in Prevention (Youth VIP). The prevention program builds on youth-adult partnerships among middle and high school students in Rapid City, South Dakota. Consenting students will take part in a youth summit where they will be trained as popular opinion leaders to spread SV prevention messages among middle and high school youth and parents. Following the summit, youth will work in small groups focused on different aspects of evidence-based prevention strategies including bystander intervention, social marketing messaging, parent education, norms change, and social emotional learning. Multiple research methods will be used to examine implementation process and cost. In addition, consenting students will take six surveys across three years including several surveys before programming begins, and several to document Youth VIP outcomes after prevention programming takes place. Survey data from a demographically similar community will be used to assess changes over time among youth in Rapid City, SD. All phases of the project will be implemented with collaboration from a Research Programming Advisory Board of community members and professionals from Rapid City, SD.

Primary Prevention of Sexual Violence Among College Students

This project is designed to address the urgent need for an effective primary prevention approach to the problem of sexual violence among college students. The project involves developing, feasibility testing, and testing for effectiveness an innovative new approach to the primary prevention of sexual violence, alcohol, and drug abuse among college students utilizing both online e-learning and small group facilitator-led intervention modalities. The intervention is an adaptation of the successful evidence-based substance abuse and violence prevention approach called Life Skills Training (LST). The adapted intervention is designed to address the relationship between sexual violence and substance abuse; positively change social norms surrounding alcohol/drug abuse and sexual violence; train bystanders to identify and appropriately respond to problematic situations; and build social, self-regulation, and relationship skills through interactive learning and behavioral rehearsal scenarios. At the conclusion of the study, the investigators expect to be able to widely disseminate and market a new evidence-based primary prevention intervention for sexual violence for use in a variety of higher educational settings.

Stepping Stones and Creating Futures Intervention Trial

This study evaluates whether the behavioural/structural interventions of Stepping Stones and Creating Futures can reduce the incidence of intimate partner violence in urban informal settlements amongst young people. Half the participants will receive the interventions, while the other half will be in a control wait-list, only receiving the intervention after final data collection.

This project will expand the existing evidence base by evaluating Sources of Strength for sexual violence outcomes in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) in twenty-four high schools.

Music Workshops in the EMPOWER Clinic

Women will be recruited from the EMPOWER clinic when they present for care; they may be given a flyer as part of their clinic entry paperwork, or approached by a study staff member in the waiting area of the clinic. Women who are clients of Sanctuary for Families may find out about the music workshops and the study through Sanctuary for Families staff, who will post flyers in their noticeboards or offices. This study will use a repeated measures survey design to evaluate the effect of a musical workshop intervention to aid in the management of mood, anxiety, and stress among women enrolled in the EMPOWER clinic for survivors of sex trafficking and sexual violence. Assessment of the feasibility and acceptability of this music intervention will be carried out on participants as they are taught to manage stress and emotions.
