A new clinical practice to reduce perineal trauma has been adopted by many maternity wards in Sweden. This practice involves collegial midwifery assistance during the second stage of labor and the birth of the baby. The midwife responsible for the birth is the primary carer of the woman and the second midwife observes the birth or assists the primary midwife if asked to. The hypothesis is that the presence and support of an extra midwife will reduce severe perineal trauma (trauma to the anal sphincter (OASI)). The objective of this trial is to evaluate whether collegial midwifery assistance during the second stage reduces perineal trauma grade III-IV.

This randomized controlled trial aims to compare three groups of intravenous fluids and their impact on labor: 1) 125 mL/hr of 5% dextrose in normal saline 2) 250 mL/hr of normal saline 3) 250 mL/hr of 5% dextrose in normal saline
In this study we intend to randomly assign each parturient one of two commonly used oils to be applied during the second stage of labor, one of them containing vitamin E. We will verify if perineal massage increases the chances of delivering with an intact perineum comparing the two oils. As secondary objectives, we will evaluate the effects of perineal massage on specific tear location, the severity of perineal tears and the amount of suture material required for repair.
