Imaging the Neurochemistry of Drug Addiction With PET

Imaging the Neurochemistry of Drug Addiction With PET

The investigators' project has two overarching goals. 1) The investigators will use newly developed positron emission tomography (PET) technology to investigate the dopaminergic neurochemistry of drugs of abuse including marijuana, traditional cigarettes, and cocaine, and 2) The investigators will extend PET technology to an additional neurotransmitter system - namely, the opioid-ergic system, using the same drugs of abuse.

Web-Based Contingency Management Training for Addictions - CM-TSS

Online Training Support System for Community-Based Substance Abuse Agencies

Adolescent substance abuse results in significant negative outcomes and extraordinary costs for youths, their families, communities and society (societal costs estimated at over $400 billion annually and greater than costs for any other health problem). There is a clear public health need for improving and expanding the delivery of evidence-based treatments for adolescent substance use, but despite this clear need, there is a large divide between science and practice. This project will develop a cost-effective, easily accessible, web-based Training Support System (TSS) for Contingency Management that incorporates ongoing training, feedback, and support provided to both counselors and their community-based agencies.

Translational Neuropsychopharmacology Research of Nicotine Addiction

Translational Neuropsychopharmacology Research of Nicotine Addiction

This study will examine the effects of combining Varenicline (VRN) and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) on neural circuitry function and treating nicotine addiction. Healthy adult nicotine dependent cigarette smokers interested in quitting (n=110) will be randomized to one of four PBO-controlled conditions for 4 weeks: 1) VRN+NAC, 2) VRN+PBO, 3) NAC+PBO or 4) PBO+PBO. Following 1 week of medication, participants will be contingently reinforced for 3 days of smoking abstinence and be scanned using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) techniques, while nicotine deprived during a resting state and a cue-reactivity (CR) task. Participants will be followed over the next 3 weeks of treatment and clinical variables will be assessed.

Transcranial Random Noise Stimulation in Food Addiction Treatment - tRNS-FA

Effect of Transcranial Random Noise Stimulation of Prefrontal Cortex on Craving Supply Subject Suffering From Obesity

Obesity is worldwide a public health problem. According to World Health Organization (WHO), overweight and obesity are the fifth death risk factor worldwide. At least 2.8 million adults die each year. Food addiction is one of the causes of obesity that may benefit from new therapeutic options.

Novel Intervention for Amphetamine-type Stimulants Addiction

The Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) for Amphetamine-type Stimulants Addiction

The repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) will be used to treat amphetamine-type stimulant (ATS) addiction.

Prognosis of Behavioral Addiction in Parkinson's Disease - PROBA-PD

Our hypothesis is that the conventional treatment of Behavioral Addiction in Parkinson's disease is often not effective, and that affects the motor aspects (worsening akinéto-rigid syndrome and / or worsening of dyskinesia due to higher levodopa doses to compensate for the drop in behavioral addictions) and non-motor (withdrawal syndrome dopamine agonist) anxiously including apathy. Our goal is to describe the natural history of Behavioral Addiction under the effect of the evolution of the disease and adapt treatment according to the prior art, through a study of a larger population of patients than in the few published studies.

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) of the Insula for Treatment of Alcohol Addiction

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) of the Insula for Treatment of Alcohol Addiction

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) targeting the insula on alcohol use and neural responses in alcohol-dependent patients.

Cluster Headache, Addictions and Vascular Function - CHAD

Cluster Headache (CH), Addictions and Vascular Function

Cluster headache (CH) is one of the most painful primitive headaches. Developments in neuroimaging have demonstrated activation of the ipsilateral hypothalamic and orexinergic system, which is similar in patients with addictions. CH has strong links to the vascular system but there is no study measuring endothelial function in CH sufferers.

Food Addiction and Hormone Study

Food Addition and Hormone Study

The purpose of this exploratory study is to use Electrogastrography (EGG) to measure and compare the gastric myoelectrical activity between persons with food addiction (FA) and a control group. Additionally, this study will explore if differences exist between perceived hunger and satiety and hormone levels related to hunger and satiety in both groups. The comparison of the EGG readings and hormone levels is the next step in furthering our understanding of food addiction and how the physiology - not simply the symptomatology - of FA does or does not relate to weight management.
