Filter by:Schizophrenia is a chronic and severe mental disorder affecting 20 million people throughout the world and is the fourth leading cause of disability in the developed world. Currently, restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, cause greater social withdrawal, reduced access to social support, lack of motivation, under-activity and loneliness for patients with schizophrenia. Given the prevalence of under-activity, interventions such as dance/movement therapy that use movement and dance to support intellectual, emotional, and motor functions of the body, can optimize the functioning of individuals with schizophrenia. There have been urgent calls for research on telehealth interventions to address the mental health needs caused by COVID-19 pandemic. To address this call, this study will test the feasibility and acceptability of a novel, 10-week dance/movement therapy protocol to promote activation in chronic schizophrenia designed for telehealth delivery. This study will be the first to examine the feasibility and preliminary effects of telehealth dance/movement therapy to promote activation in chronic schizophrenia. This study can contribute towards the development of telehealth interventions for treatment and rehabilitation of individuals with chronic schizophrenia.
Psychosis is a severe mental health problem. Symptoms of psychosis include hallucinations (e.g. hearing voices that others cannot hear) and delusions (unusual, often troubling beliefs). People who experience psychosis often have times when their symptoms are relatively stable. At other times, their symptoms may increase and become much more problematic (a 'relapse'). Helping people with psychosis to stay well (preventing relapses) is an important and time-consuming challenge for mental health services. Smartphones and other digital technologies are now widespread. This offers a solution to help tackle the overwhelming demand on services and to enable people with psychosis to access mental health support when they need it most (e.g. when relapsing). Research shows that people with psychosis are often willing to report their symptoms using a smartphone app. Apps like this can alert health professionals when someone needs extra support, but can be burdensome to use long-term. The investigators want to make a system that is less burdensome and is personalised to users' needs and experiences (a 'complex digital remote monitoring system'). Recent research shows that information gathered routinely by individuals' smartphones (e.g. GPS, step count) might help predict relapses of psychosis. The investigators want to use this method in a complex digital remote monitoring system. First, the investigators need to know what people with psychosis and mental health staff think about this idea. The investigators will interview around sixty adults with psychosis and around forty staff, recruited from UK mental health services (Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Cardiff, London, Sussex). These one-off, audio-recorded interviews will last up to 60 minutes. The interviewer will ask about participants' views on complex digital remote monitoring. The investigators will then systematically analyse the interviews. Findings will inform the design of the investigators' own complex digital remote monitoring system and future digital tools designed by other researchers. NIHR and Wellcome are funding this study.
The purpose of this study is to examine state representation in individuals aged 15-45 who have been diagnosed with a psychotic illness, as well as young adults who do not have a psychiatric diagnosis. State Representation is our ability to process information about our surroundings. The investigators will complete a clinical trial examining two paradigms of cognitive training.
This open trial will test a new technology-supported blended intervention, mobile Social Interaction Therapy by Exposure (mSITE), that targets social engagement in consumers with serious mental illness.
In this study, an investigational medication named BXCL501 is being tested for the treatment of episodes of agitation associated with bipolar I and bipolar II disorder, schizophrenia, schizoaffective and schizophreniform disorder. This study compares the study drug to a placebo.

State Representation is our ability to process information about our surroundings. The investigators will complete some observational tests as well as a cognitive training clinical trial.
The proposed project is based on the observation that schizophrenia is characterized by a chronic pro-inflammatory state, which contributes to the severity of a number of the clinical manifestations of the illness, including cognitive impairments, the treatment of which represents a critically important unmet therapeutic need.
This research project focuses on a fundamental element of the psychopathology of schizophrenia, that is to say, the disorders of self-awareness and on the functional alterations associated with it, that is to say, self-compassion deficit and empathy disorder. It will be a question of better understanding the neuro-functional mechanisms which underlie the lack of self-compassion and the disorder of empathy in schizophrenia, the relationship that these disorders maintain between them but also the relationship that they maintain with the general psychopathology of schizophrenia and, in particular, with the abnormalities of the self. In other words, the overall framework of this project is that of the link between the psychopathology of schizophrenia and the functional impairment associated with it. Its specific field of application is that of the link between self-awareness disorders, self-compassion deficit and empathy disorder. For this, this project proposes a methodological approach combining the recording of intrinsic and extrinsic brain activity using high-density electroencephalography (EEG).
Serious mental illnesses (SMI) like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are two of the most disabling and costly chronic illnesses worldwide. A high proportion of adults with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder have sleep disorders, like obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), but tend to be underdiagnosed and undertreated compared to the general population. This study aims to examine feasibility, acceptance, and impact of OSA treatment and how it affects cognitive function in people with SMI.
