The primary purpose of this prospective, randomized multicenter center study is to evaluate and compare the outcomes of colorectal, coloanal and ileoanal anastomoses reinforced with a bioabsorbable staple line reinforcement material compared with standard non-reinforced colorectal, coloanal and ileoanal techniques with respect to the incidence of postoperative anastomotic leakage, anastomotic stricture and time to ileostomy closure, if applicable.

Cetuximab, 5-FU and Radiation as Neoadjuvant Therapy for Patients With Locally Advanced Rectal Cancer

The standard treatment for rectal cancer is to receive the chemotherapeutic drug 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) with radiation therapy before having surgery to remove the rectal cancer. This is known as neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy. The purpose of this research study is to determine if Cetuximab improves the benefits of neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy when given with 5-FU and radiation therapy.

Phase II Trial of Neoadjuvant FOLFOX4 and Cetuximab for Localized Adenocarcinoma of Rectum

This study involves the use of Oxaliplatin, 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU), Leucovorin and Cetuximab, which are all medicines approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and are commercially available. This treatment regimen will possibly be combined with radiation before and/or after surgery depending on your response to the treatment. Their use in this exact combination is considered experimental. The purpose of this study is to find out how effective this combination of chemotherapy is as treatment for rectal cancer that has not spread to other parts of the body. The side effects and survival experienced by subjects receiving these drugs will also be evaluated. This is a phase II research study.

Assessment of Health Related Quality of Life in Patients Treated for Rectal Cancer

Treatment of rectal cancer often consists of surgical resection of the tumor. Chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy are frequently given before or after surgery. In this study, we wish to learn if there are differences in the treatment effectiveness or in the quality of life of patients based on their type of treatment (e.g. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy before or after surgery). Information from this questionnaire collected from you and other patients may help improve the quality of life of rectal cancer patients in the future. Medical information on your tumor, treatment received, and side effects will be compiled and maintained in a database to learn more about outcomes of treatment for rectal cancer.

Comparative Study of Circular Stapling Instruments

After removing the rectum at surgery, bowel continuity can sometimes be restored by an anastomosis between the anus and the bowel. This anastomosis is most commonly created by the use of surgical circular stapling instruments. In a retrospective pilot study the risk of developing an acute leak in the anastomosis was increased with one of the most commonly used instruments in Sweden as compared to the other brand in use. In the current study the patient is randomized to either one of the instruments after a resection of the rectum for rectal cancer.
