The purpose of this study is to investigate the feasibility of combining heavy-slow resistance training with an ultrasound-guided corticosteroid injection to reduce pain in individuals with plantar fasciopathy. Feasibility will be evaluated using the acceptability of the combined interventions and exercise compliance.
The purpose of this trial is to investigate whether a self-managed resistance training protocol is more effective than a predetermined resistance training protocol in improving the Foot Health Status Questionnaire pain domain score in individuals with plantar fasciopathy after a 12-week intervention.
This study will compare the thickness of the plantar fascia in stretched and relaxed positions in patients with plantar fasciopathy using ultrasonography.
This study investigates the acute effect of isotonic versus isometric exercise versus walking on pain in individuals with plantar heel pain and an ultrasound-diagnosed plantar fasciopathy. The hypothesis is that isometric exercise will induce greater participant rated pain relief than isotonic exercise and walking during aggravating activity.
The investigators will compare Achilles tendon stretching with a new product called a ThermaWedge™ device, a foam wedge designed to help with certain foot stretches and exercises, in the treatment of chronic plantar fasciopathy. There will be 2 groups each of 25 - 30 participants who have chronic plantar fasciopathy, which is a common cause of foot pain. Exercises will be done for 6 weeks and then each group will do the other exercise protocol for another 6 weeks. Participants will fill out the Foot and Ankle Disability Index scale and numerical analog pain scale and the Global Rating of Change Scale prior to any treatment, weekly during treatment and post treatment. The investigators' hypothesis is that use of the ThermaWedge™ device will result in decreased pain and disability when compared to achilles tendon stretching.
Plantar fasciopathy is a chronic condition affecting both sedentary populations, individuals in the workplace who must stand for prolonged periods of time, and athletes. It can be disabling. There is no single accepted treatment course that is recommended in the literature. The use of pulsed radio-frequency electromagnetic (PRFE) devices has been proposed as a treatment option in chronic soft-tissue injury due to its ability to reduce pain and inflammation. The proposed study will investigate the efficacy of the use of a PRFE device for the treatment of chronic heel pain using a double blind randomized placebo controlled design study.
