The Effect of Reiki Application on Episiotomy and Perineal Pain

Purpose: To investigate the effect of Reiki application on postpartum episiotomy recovery and perineal pain in postpartum women who had vaginal delivery. Design and framework: The research is randomized controlled in a pre-test post-test order in a hospital in Turkey. By using Simple Random Numbers Table as the randomization method in the selection of the sample, a total of 86 puerperal women, 40 in the intervention group and 46 in the control group, were recruited. Episiotomy recovery of the intervention and control groups on the 1st day, 2nd day, 7th day, and 14th day postpartum was evaluated with the REEDA Scale, and perineal pain was evaluated with the McGill Pain Scale Short Form. Participants: Postpartum women who gave vaginal birth participated in the study. Intervention: 3 sessions of Reiki for 35-40 minutes were applied to the intervention group on the 1st, 2nd and 7th days of birth. Results: There was a significant difference between the mean REEDA Scale edema scores in the 7th day (p=0.028) and 14th day (p=0.013) follow-up of the intervention and control groups. A significant difference was found between the 3rd post-test McGill Pain Scale Short Form total pain score averages (p=0.005) and the 4th follow-up McGill Pain Scale Short Form total pain score averages (p=0.001) of the intervention and control groups.

Suturing Techniques on Perineal Pain

Perineorrhaphy, sometimes referred to as perineoplasty, is a common procedure in pelvic reconstructive surgery that entails surgical repair of the perineum. Indications may include: prevention of recurrent prolapse, treatment of pain, and improved sexual function and cosmesis, as well as to treat the sensation of a "wide vagina." Differences in postoperative pain by suturing technique and standard use of suture type are not well established. Patient satisfaction can be influenced by patient perceptions regarding postoperative pain, therefore reducing postoperative pain scores remains a priority. It is unclear whether suturing technique is associated with less pain after this procedure. Based on studies on repair of obstetric lacerations, we hypothesize that a subcuticular skin closure will be associated with less postoperative perineal pain compared to interrupted transcutaneous sutures.

Reduction of Perineal Pain After Vaginal Birth With Black Tea: Pilot Randomized Study

Perineal trauma is common during vaginal birth. The discomfort this causes can interfere with a woman's recovery and early motherhood.Mothers are offered a standard treatment after childbirth, water soaked frozen peri pads (ice packs), to alleviate the discomfort. However, a Cochrane review questions the efficacy of ice packs treatment. An alternative treatment that may be more comfortable and effective for women is warm water soaked black tea bags. Medicinal use of black tea bags has been based on their astringent (shrinking or constricting) properties and have been used for various medical applications. The investigators will conduct a pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) of 40 pregnant mothers randomized to either intervention group (tea bags; n=20) or control group (ice packs; n=20). The goal of this pilot is to test the feasibility of a larger RCT by assessing recruitment, testing the protocol, and evaluating a proposed primary outcome objective of analgesic use during hospitalization as an indicator of pain. The investigators expect this pilot study to demonstrate feasibility for a large scale RCT to formally evaluate the efficacy of black tea bags to reduce perineal pain in this patient population.
