Filter by:Decreased bone strength is a serious medical problem present in many women with Anorexia Nervosa, or disordered eating. Women with weaker bones are more likely to suffer broken bones than women with normal bone strength. We are investigating whether a hormone that is naturally produced by the human body, called growth hormone, can help strengthen the bones of women with this type of disordered eating.
Estrogen is a hormone that helps prevent calcium loss and bone breakdown. During menopause, estrogen levels decrease. Insufficient amounts of estrogen may lead to bone loss and possibly osteoporosis. Isoflavones are natural compounds found in soy plants that may help provide protection against bone loss. This study will evaluate the effect of soy isoflavones on calcium absorption and bone loss in post menopausal women.
The goals of the trial are: - To determine the prevalence of osteoporosis in subgroups of COPD patients. - To look for risk factors of osteoporosis in COPD patients. - To create sub-groups for prospective research concerning the effects of bisphosphonates on osteoporosis variables in COPD patients.
To evaluate the effectiveness of a multifaceted intervention (reminder and educational material) in improving the evaluation of osteoporosis follow-up care of post-menopausal women with wrist fractures by their primary care physicians. The intervention is directed at improving the gap in continuity of care between emergency/fracture clinics and family physicians, and reducing knowledge gaps.
The primary objective of this study is to compare the effectiveness of standard medical therapy alone to kyphoplasty using the KyphX system for the treatment of acute vertebral body compression fractures.
The purpose of the study is to determine the effectiveness of combining exercise training (i.e. weight lifting and walking) and dietary supplementation with a soy-based nutritional supplement for increasing bone mineral density. We hypothesize that the exercise training and soy-based supplement will be additive for increasing bone mineral density.

This is a randomized, double-blind, multicentre, parallel pilot clinical trial to study the efficacy of a treatment of lactulose 15 ml + vitamin D 400 U + calcium 0.5 g compared to lactulose placebo 15 ml + vitamin D 400 U + calcium 1 g in bone mass preservation among postmenopausal women.
Osteopenia and osteoporosis are increasingly reported in HIV-infected patients, and appear to be more frequent than in general population. However, pathogenesis remains unclear, and published studies still give non concordant results. We therefore started a prospective study, to assess the potential role of ARV in the occurrence of osteopenia and osteoporosis. BMD evolution over a 2-years period of follow-up, will be compared between patients starting ARV therapy, and subjects without HAART (no indication of treatment). A correlation between BMD and several factors will be looked at (see below). This study with individual direct benefice, is conducted in 3 outpatients clinics (Strasbourg, Colmar, Mulhouse) in collaboration with the rheumatologic teams. 60 patients are planned to be included over a 3-years inclusion period
