Filter by:RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop cancer cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to damage tumor cells. Chemoprotective drugs, such as amifostine, may protect normal cells from the side effects of chemotherapy. PURPOSE: Phase I/II trial to study the effectiveness of paclitaxel and radiation therapy plus chemoprotection with amifostine in treating patients with stage III or stage IV head and neck cancer.
RATIONALE: Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to damage tumor cells. Drugs such as pilocarpine may protect normal cells from the side effects of radiation therapy. It is not yet known if pilocarpine may be effective in preventing mucositis and dry mouth in patients receiving radiation therapy for head and neck cancer. PURPOSE: Randomized, double-blinded, phase III trial to study the effectiveness of pilocarpine in preventing mucositis and dry mouth in patients receiving radiation therapy for head and neck cancer.
RATIONALE: Giving fluconazole may be effective in preventing or controlling mucositis caused by radiation therapy to the head and neck. PURPOSE: Randomized phase II/III trial to study the effectiveness of fluconazole in preventing mucositis in patients undergoing radiation therapy for head and neck cancer.
