Filter by:Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) comprises physical, sexual and emotional abuse and controlling behaviors imposed by an intimate partner. It is estimated that up to 92% of women who survive IPV may have suffered one or more traumatic brain injuries (TBI) from blows to the head, face, and neck, and/or anoxia or hypoxia due to strangulation. Even mild TBI may manifest as alternations in consciousness, black out, dizziness, disorientation, anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, muscles weakness or paralysis and deficits in memory, attention, planning as well as executive functions. These signs and symptoms of TBI and their consequences impact the quality of life of women surviving IPV. Furthermore, survivors experiencing multiple IPV may acquire larger extent of the injury. Though this is recognized as an urgent and serious issue worldwide, it has been remarkably understudied. To improve the quality of life of women experiencing IPV-related TBI, and to prevent potential longer-term consequences, an evidence-based therapeutic treatment is an urgent need. The Supporting Survivors of Abuse and Brain Injury through Research (SOAR) Project at the University of British Columbia-Okanagan was designed to integrate TBI knowledge into community-based supports. This Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research (MSFHR) trainee application will focus on the evaluation of the effectiveness of a community support network intervention for women with IPV-related TBI. The outcomes will generate valuable evidence to inform potential new TBI-informed policies regarding community-based and health care supports for survivors of IPV.
This study aims to explore possible solutions needed for valid and reliable multidimensional objective assessment tools to use in screening performers for concussions, as well as, for use postinjury assessment and management of the mild traumatic brain injury, regardless of time since injury occurrence. These mobile tools would also enable clinicians to test the effectiveness of the interventions used post-concussion, prior to fully releasing the performer back into full performance/active status.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate a multi-disciplinary, multi-setting intervention with the goal of improving outcomes for children who have experienced a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). The project aims to improve and support mTBI diagnosis and management, and improve critical decision making by clinicians during their interaction with the injured child, their family, and their school.
The goal of HeadSMART II (HEAD injury Serum markers and Multi-modalities for Assessing Response to Trauma II) is to develop an In-Vitro Diagnostic, the BRAINBox TBI test, to aid in the diagnosis and prognosis of patients with mild traumatic brain injury, by incorporating blood biomarkers, clinical assessments, and tools to measure associated neurocognitive impairments.
This study will establish the capability of a suite of conventional tests and the Neurolign Dx_100 I-PAS goggle system to reliably and objectively detect mTBI in an acute setting when comparing individuals with mTBI to controls with minor injuries in a similarly stressful environment.
With an average of 21,000 diagnosed brain injuries each year among military personnel, traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains a major health concern for the United States Military Health System. Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is the most common type of brain injury sustained by military personnel and may result in chronic cognitive impairment.Unfortunately, many service members (SMs) have a history of multiple head injuries as well as psychological co-morbidities that negatively influence recovery. Advances in treatment options for cognitive rehabilitation following mTBI have been of increasing interest to the medical community and may increase treatment efficacy for injured SMs to ensure force readiness. Cognitive Rehabilitation (CR) for severe brain injury focuses on compensatory strategies for activities of daily living such as using lists to remember grocery items or reminders to take medications and attend medical appointments. Research has shown CR interventions to have considerable effectiveness in the acute and sub-acute phase of recovery after severe TBI. But there is insufficient evidence that they improve rates of individuals returning to work, independence in activities of daily living (ADL), community re-integration, or quality of life.
This study aims to adapt two decision aids (DAs) (pediatric and adult) developed in the United States to the Quebec context to develop context-adapted tools and training program that will facilitate the process of shared decision-making while taking a decision to use head computed tomography (CT scan) with patients suffering from a mild traumatic brain injury.
This is a research study that aims to examine whether Veterans with mild Traumatic Brain Injuries are at risk for dementia by studying their memory, brain wave activity, brain structure and proteins that can be elevated after brain injury and in dementia.
The objectives of this VA Merit application are to identify a neural target unique to Veterans with co-occurring alcohol use disorder and mild traumatic brain injury (AUD+mTBI) and to test the efficacy of this target as a stimulation site for repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) treatment to maximize functional recovery. rTMS will soon be a treatment option at 30 VAs nationwide and preliminary studies show promise for AUD and mTBI treatment. A better understanding of how AUD+mTBI impacts the brain needs to occur in order to advance rTMS to optimize function. This research is aligned with the VA RR&D's mission to generate knowledge and innovations to advance the rehabilitative health and care of Veterans, to effectively integrate clinical and applied rehabilitation research, and translate research results into practice. This research is also aligned with the goal of the Psychological Health & Social Reintegration portfolio to develop interventions improving psychological health status of Veterans enabling them to function more fully in society.
The investigators hypothesize that patients with mild TBI and normal TCD can be safely discharged home immediately after the ED. The targeted population is the category of patients eligible for early discharge: 1) patients with mild lesions on the initial CT scan and a GCS 15 after CT scan completion and, 2) patients with no lesion on the initial cerebral CT scan with at least one of the following risk factors: GCS 14 after CT scan completion, persisting post-traumatic nausea/vomiting/headaches, concomitant alcoholic intoxication or patients treated with aspirin. The study will not include mild TBI patients who are not eligible for early discharge: patients with no possibility of home supervision, those with a GCS lower than 14 after the CT scan or those treated with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs other than aspirin. The investigators expect the TCD-based strategy to be non-inferior compared to the standard strategy according to French recommendations in terms of the 3-months neurological outcome. From a public health standpoint, the use of TCD as a triage tool may change current guidelines regarding mild TBI management.
