Kinesio Taping Versus Compression Garments for Breast Cancer-Related Lymphedema

Breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) tends to become chronic and progressive. Current therapies have modest results for this condition. Compression garments (CG) prevent the worsening of lymphedema and even improve it, during periods between treatments of physical therapy. Kinesio Taping(KT) is being recently used for lymphedema, although little evidence backs it. The aim of this study is to compare the reduction of lymphedema volume with both therapies.

Decongestive Exercise and Compression for Breast Cancer Related Lymphedema Management

Women who have undergone breast cancer surgery may develop swelling of the arm on the side the breast cancer occurred. If the swelling becomes chronic it is called lymphedema. This study will examine the effect of a 12-week decongestive progressive resistance exercise with advanced compression on breast cancer related lymphedema. Our objective is to determine if breast cancer survivors are willing and able to wear advanced compression while exercising and if the combination will help to reduce their lymphedema. Twenty-four breast cancer survivors from Edmonton, Alberta will be enrolled in the one-year long study.

Lymphedema is a frequent and chronic condition posing a high burden on patients. Clinical guidelines emphasize the role of compression therapy by prescription medical devices. Even in a mandatory publicly funded health insurance system, out-of-pocket payments (OOPP) may exist due to the price and reimbursement setting processes. OOPP may threaten the equity of care and drive patients to forgo care. Our aim was to analyze the distributive effects of OOPP for lymphedema patients in France. A prospective, multicenter study will be conducted in France in 2014 on patients with lymphedema. Household ability to pay will be specified by net income and OOPP will be assessed prospectively over 6 months for outpatient care (visits, drugs, medical devices, nursing care, biological tests, imaging, physiotherapy and transportations). Both mandatory and voluntary health insurance reimbursements will be considered. We will combine concentration curves and concentration indices to assess the distributive effects.

Fat Grafting Used for the Treatment of Breast Cancer Related Lymphedema in China

Breast cancer related lymphedema (BRCL) is a common complication following breast cancer treatment. The incidence of BRCL ranges from 6-50%, depending on the surgical procedure in the axilla and the type of the radiation therapy. BRCL can causes cosmetic deformities, impaired physical mobility, mental discomfort, reduced quality of life and erysipelas. Therapy of BRCL is divided into conservative and operative methods. However, all the above method has some shortcomings. It is urgent to investigate new approaches to treat BRCL. In this study, fat grafting is to be used for the treatment of BRCL, and the efficacy and safety of this method will be also assessed.

Rehabilitation results in a decrease of the perimeters of the limb with lymphedema by a decrease in the amount of liquid of the affected limb, with movement of the intracellular liquid towards the trunk and the neck then into the jugular-subclavian confluence, the superior vena cava and right atrium without modification of extracellular fluid. No study have evaluated the prevalence of sleep apnea syndrome in this population and the effect of this treatment on sleep apnea syndrome.

Lymphedema Treatment for Blunt Facial Trauma

Injuries to the face caused by traumatic events such as motor vehicle collisions, assault, and falls can result in facial trauma, which can result in swelling and disfiguration that impairs the important functions of the face, sometimes to a life threatening degree. These injures and the resultant swelling can also precipitate psychological and social consequences. Lymphedema is an abnormal amount of fluid that causes swelling, usually in the arms or legs. The most common presentation of lymphedema is in the upper extremities due to breast cancer treatment (Maclellean RA et al). As such, standards of care for management of lymphedema are primarily derived from the cancer research literature and involve the extremities (Moffatt CJ. 2003 QJM). The current gold standard treatment for patients with extremity lymphedema is complete decongestive therapy (CDT) (Zuther 2013). CDT is a multimodal therapy consisting of four components: manual lymph drainage, compression wrapping, exercise, and skin care (Zuther 2013).These same therapeutic techniques of CDT have been employed at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center (OLOLRMC) and adapted to treat patients with facial trauma with anecdotally good results primarily related to cosmesis. To the best of our knowledge, no clinical studies examining the effect of lymphedema treatment in the management of blunt facial trauma currently exist.. Beyond the consideration of cosmesis, we also seek to determine if this intervention improves clinical outcomes such as time to swallowing and reduced time utilizing mechanical ventilation. This study will prospectively evaluate the use of complete decongestive therapy to test the hypothesis that this intervention results in improved clinical outcomes in patients with blunt facial trauma.
