HIIT and MICT on Nitric Oxide-mediated Erythrocyte Rheology

Erythrocyte rheological properties affect blood viscoelasticity and consequently regulate vascular resistance to flow shear force, whereas rheological impairments of erythrocytes may result in circulatory disorders. The aim of this study was to establish an effective exercise strategy for improving individual aerobic capacity and for simultaneously ameliorating the risk of hemorheological dysfunction evoked by a graded exercise test (GXT) and the hypotheses is exercise intervention will improved hemorheological functions by enhancing deformability of erythrocytes via NO-mediated mechanism. This study included 60 healthy sedentary mens (age 20~30) from Chang Gung university than were randomized into the HIIT [3-min intervals at 40% and 80% V̇O2 reserve (V̇O2R),n=10] and MICT(sustained 60% V̇O2R,n=10)on a bicycle ergometer for 30min·d-1, 5 d·wk-1 for 6 wk.

Functional Impact of Interval Training on Muscle Mass and Strength in Obese Adults

The primary objective was to investigate the effectiveness of interval training and to evaluate the best available method for measuring body composition and functional capacity. Thirty obese subjects consecutively voluntarily participated in the current study. They ranked sedentary according to their level of activity (≥ 30-minute moderate physical activity 3days/wk). The training sessions were divided into the warm-up phase, training phase and a cool-down phase. The training programs were completed 3days/week for 12 weeks. Body composition was calculated by skinfold thickness method and bio-impedance before and after training. Similarly, aerobic capacities were measured by lactate threshold testing and by Astrand submaximal testing.

It is widely known that exercise improves general fitness and that fitter patients recover more easily from illness and surgery. Conversely, unfit patients have a significantly higher morbidity and mortality after surgery and a longer inpatient stay. This will become increasingly important in an aging population as baseline fitness generally declines with age. One method of improving cardiovascular fitness is by using low intensity endurance training programmes, a disadvantage of these it that they can take several months to show improvement. High intensity interval training (HIT) programmes that use short episodes of high intensity exercise have also been shown to improve fitness. These HIT programmes have also shown improvement in functional capacity and quality of life in patients with chronic disease. An advantage of HIT is that improvements in fitness may occur in a shorter time than traditional endurance training. It is also known that HIT can give superior gains over endurance training. The primary aim of this study is to determine whether an improvement in aerobic fitness, as judged by a 2ml/kg/min increase in VO2peak, can be achieved within 31 days via a HIT programme, in a group of healthy elderly volunteers. As a secondary aim we will assess whether this programme would be acceptable to the group studied, through determination of subject compliance and adherence to the training programme.
