Neurodevelopment of Infants Exposed to General Anesthesia: a Multi-center Investigation

Numerous preclinical evidence has confirmed that most commonly-used general anesthetics can affect neurodevelopment of young animals adversely, causing both structural defect of brain and cognitive impairment. However, it is unclear at present whether such effect would also occur to children exposed to general anesthesia in their early life. Several observational clinical studies and one interventional clinical trial indicated that short-time general anesthesia less than 80 minutes might be safe to cognitive development. Concerning long-time and/or multiple anesthesia exposure, some studies supported its association with long-term cognitive defects, while other studies did not. These studies are mainly retrospective or ambirectional researches. We have designed a prospective, multicenter cohort study to examine the neurodevelopment of infants exposed to anesthesia before age 2 in the first year after surgery, and compare the neurodevelopment status of infants exposed to anesthesia less than 3 hours and those more than 3 hours. The Gesell Developmental Inventory (GDI) and several neuropsychological testing batteries will be used. The anticipated outcome of the study will add reliable evidence from Asians to elucidate the relationship of anesthesia and long-term neurodevelopment of infants.

our aim was to quantitatively compare the quality of chest-compression of the new two thumb chest compression (nTTT) versus the current standard techniques: two finger technique (TFT), two thumb technique (TTHT) as defined by systolic-, diastolic-, mean arterial- and pulse-pressures. Our hypothesis is that nTTT generates higher arterial blood pressures compared to the established TFT and TTHT in an infant manikin model.

Efficacy of Fermented Rice Flour for the Treatment of Atopic Dermatitis: Randomized, Double-blind Controlled Trial

This trial aims at evaluating the efficacy of a fermented rice flour for the treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD). The fermented rice flour, obtained from Lactobacillus paracasei CBA L74 (Heinz Italia SpA, Latina, Italy), does not contain live bacteria. Lactobacillus paracasei CBA L74 belongs to the list of microorganisms with qualified presumption of safety compiled by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), is tested for the absence of antibiotic resistance genes in accordance with EFSA, and is genetically characterized by repetitive extragenic palindromic polymerase chain reaction. Using a repeated-measure cohort design, the investigators have recently shown that the administration of a fermented-rice flour obtained from Lactobacillus paracasei CBA L74 was associated with a decrease of the score for atopic dermatitis (SCORAD) in children with AD. The present randomized, double-blind, controlled trial is aimed at testing whether the fermented rice flour obtained from Lactobacillus paracasei CBA L74 is effective in reducing SCORAD in children with moderate to severe AD using placebo as comparator.

Design and Development of an Infant's Oriented Face Mask

Face masks are used for many respiratory care applications such as anaesthesia, resuscitation, and aerosol therapy. None of the currently available face mask for infants and young children are specifically designed and developed for infants. The aim of this study is to design, develop and test the first infant's oriented face mask. To achieve this ultimate goal we will first define appropriate sizes of infants' faces that would be used as templates for the design and development of optimally fitted model masks. In the next stage we will use these masks and incorporate the infants' own soother (pacifier) into a new SootherMask (SM). In the last part of the study we will compare acceptance levels between Soothermask (SM) and a conventional commodity masks without a pacifier.
