Filter by:Age related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of vision loss in patients older than 55 years old. AMD can present as dry AMD or wet AMD. In most cases AMD affects both eyes although in many cases it's asymmetrical as far as severity. Some patients require low vision aids to continue their daily life tasks. In the past a few attempts were made to use low vision intraocular lenses with corrective glasses without enough success. In addition telescopic and prismatic lenses were also tried. The difficulties with these lenses included low field of vision, unsatisfactory magnification, complicated surgical technique and high complication rates. Recently an add on lens was designed for the sulcus for implantation in pseudophakic AMD patients. The add on lens doubles the magnification of the central image dependent on the reading distance and the anatomy of the eye. The lens is acrylic hydrophobic and designed for implantation in the sulcus either in pseudophakic patients or in addition to an intraocular lens implanted during a routine cataract surgery. The lens is 13 mm wide with 4 symmetric haptics. The lens has 1.5 mm central part of 10 diopters and the rest of the lens has no optical power. Our purpose is to study implantation of the lenses in AMD patients to improve their reading ability and to improve their daily living.
Randomized Controlled Trial found that levels of stress and anxiety of students ITIO, Ear and effective in reducing these levels. The LSS questionnaire and IDATE state were applied before, two months and two and a half months after the start of the applications, the STAI trait was applied once prior to the sessions. The sample comprised 56 individuals who had higher levels of stress above the average LSS 100 students who answered the questionnaires. Participants were divided randomly into three groups: control group with 15 patients without care, intervention group with 20 individuals using specific points for treatment and Group Sham at 21 points using individuals without indication for treatment of anxiety and stress. The results showed that the sham points decreased anxiety levels of participants.
The right to food and nutrition is established in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as they are basic requirements for promoting and protecting good health. They can also be instruments to evaluate the quality of life of human beings and communities. Awareness of a healthy diet is the first step in behavioral change, and nutritional education can be an instrument for avoiding diseases resulting from both intake deficit and excess. Educational group actions can change food intake. This study will aim at evaluating, planning and implementing the impact of a nutritional education group action concerning the consumption of fruit and vegetables in adult and elderly individuals attended to by a Primary Health Care (PHCU) Unit. It will be a randomized assay involving two groups comprising male and females individuals distributed in the following fashion: Intervention Group, in which the educational group action (EGA) will be performed in addition to routine activities; and Control Group, the individuals from which will only participate in the routine activities in the PHCA (Teaching Health Care Unit). The total sample will comprise 80 individuals with 40 in each group. In order to determine the consumption of fruit and vegetables, a weekday and a Sunday 24-hour recalls will be performed 2 (short-term effects) and 6 (medium-term effects) months after completing the intervention. The educational group activities will consist of two-hour group dynamics and cooking workshops once a week and for five weeks. Serum carotenoid dosages will also be performed in the two groups by sub-sampling (n=40) with the purpose to validate the estimated intake of fruit and vegetables obtained from the recalls.
