CBT for Problematic Impulsive Behaviours in Bipolar Disorder: A Case Series / CBT-PIB

The goal of this case series is to explore whether a talking therapy, specifically Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is acceptable and feasible in the management of mood-driven impulsive behaviours in people with bipolar disorder (BD). The main questions it aims to answer are: - Whether CBT Is a feasible intervention for participants with BD who report mood-driven, problematic impulsive behaviours. - Whether CBT for mood-driven, problematic impulsive behaviours (CBT-PIB) is acceptable to service users with BD and therapists. - Whether clinical outcomes are consistent with the potential for this novel intervention to offer clinical benefit to participants with BD. The study also hopes to: - conduct a preliminary examination of the safety of CBT-PIB and the research procedures. - gather information on the potential mechanisms of action of CBT-PIB and, - gather information on the types of mood-driven impulsive behaviours individuals with BD may seek support for. Participants will: - be offered up to 12 individual sessions of CBT focusing on mood-driven impulsive behaviours. - be asked to complete a battery of self-report measures (5) when they enter the study and at the start and end of treatment. - be asked to track mood and impulsive behaviours by completing a brief set of measures (3) weekly during the two-week baseline phase, the intervention phase and the 2-week post-intervention phase. - be asked to complete a survey on the acceptability of the intervention and - be invited to an optional semi-structured interview on their research experience.

Frontal iTBS for Impulsivity and Suicidal Ideation in Veterans With Mild Traumatic Brain Injury

The investigators hope to develop a treatment for suicidal ideation (SI), impulsivity and functional impairments (such as difficulties in social and work settings) that occur after a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). These conditions have been shown to be linked. The investigators are using a high-powered magnetic pulse, called intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) applied to the head to see if it can improve these symptoms. The high-powered magnetic pulse causes certain cells in the brain to activate, which seems to strengthen connections between parts of the brain. The purpose of this research is to gather early information on the safety and effectiveness of iTBS provided to the front of the head for impulsivity, SI and functional deficits after mTBI. The investigators plan to use the data collected in this study to develop larger studies in the future. iTBS is FDA approved, but not for these specific symptoms, or in the specific location the investigators are placing it. The investigators are testing to see if its effective for the above conditions when applied to the front of the head.

The UniVenture Program

UniVenture is a research partnership with one common goal: to adapt, test, and begin sharing an effective, sustainable, targeted wellness program to tackle the timely social issue of heavy drinking and other substance misuse on Canadian campuses. Our project is a 5-year, multi-site, controlled study involving 1st and 2nd year undergraduates at 5 representatively diverse Canadian university sites (Dalhousie University, St. Francis Xavier University, York University, Université de Montréal, and University of British Columbia-Okanagan). The investigator will test a program targeting personality traits linked to substance misuse. An earlier version of this program led to marked reductions in substance use and distress in adolescents. Our novel objectives are to examine the program's effects on substance use and distress among emerging adults; uptake of prescription drug use given the opioid crisis; and undergraduates' academic success. The investigator will carry out a randomized controlled trail in which two versions of the program will be assessed: a face-to-face and an innovative and accessible technology-assisted distance-delivery format, both compared to normal campus services alone. UniVenture may potentially have a dramatic effect on university policies on the prevention of substance misuse on Canadian campuses by helping partners appreciate the effectiveness of targeted and personalized approaches, and leveraging partners' expansive networks to inform other Canadian universities. A successful technology-assisted distance-delivered program will provide universities with an effective, relatively low-cost, and accessible tool to intervene with risky substance use behaviors in undergraduates. A successful program for at-risk students will also profoundly impact their academic performance and goal achievement, as well as their lives beyond university. Our partnership will impact knowledge sharing and student training opportunities. With a diversity of academic and non-academic partners and an integrative knowledge sharing approach, the investigator will share results with many audiences throughout the project. The academic researchers have recognized expertise in training and mentoring students. Further, trainees will be exposed to many opportunities and settings both inside and outside of the university in which to apply their research skills to substance misuse prevention.

Suicide has become a major public health problem among young people around the world. This study will examine the effects of higher secondary school-based suicide prevention (HSSSP) program on youth suicidal thoughts and impulsive behavior (STIB). Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the effects of didactic approach for youth STIB on the HSSSP program. This study is designed to address this issue at the secondary school level. Therefore, this research is divided into two studies. In the first study, our goal was to arrange a Baseline assessment for the screening process of adolescents at risk of suicide. while in second study we aim to implement a didactic approach based on religious teachings and culture milieu and examine its effects as an evidence based suicide prevention program.

Effects of Neuromodulation and Cognitive Training for Suicide in Veterans (ENACTS)

Impaired executive function, such as impaired decision making and impulsivity, has been identified as an important contributor to the transition from suicidal ideation to suicide attempt. To address the epidemic of Veteran suicide in the United States, this study tests the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness of a five day transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) augmented executive functioning training intervention. This intervention is delivered to high suicide risk inpatients. The ultimate goal is to reduce future suicide events (ideation, attempts, deaths) and improve quality of life (e.g. social relationships, health resource utilization).

This study aims to (i) assess the effects of combined tDCS and cognitive training on decision-making on a trained task (Iowa Gambling Task; IGT); and (ii) test generalization to a closely related cognitive domain, namely motor impulsivity. It is hypothesized that combined anodal tDCS and cognitive training will result in more advantageous decisions and better impulse control than combined sham tDCS and cognitive training.

Shaping Tolerance for Delayed Rewards

Deficits in self-control are of major public health relevance as they contribute to several negative outcomes for both individuals and society. For children, developing self-control is a critically important step toward success in academic settings and social relationships, yet there are few non-pharmacological approaches that have been successful in increasing self-control. We found in our earlier studies that self-control can be increased in preschool-aged children with high impulsivity by using games in which they practice gradually increasing wait-time for larger, more delayed rewards. We are performing this current study to test if this training to increase self-control can be increased using mobile app technology, with computerized game time being used as a reward.
