NCT ID: NCT06465979 Recruiting - Hearing Loss Clinical Trials

Perception of Speech in Context by Listeners With Healthy and Impaired Hearing

Start date: September 18, 2023
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

Recognition of speech sounds is accomplished through the use of adjacent sounds in time, in what is termed acoustic context. The frequency and temporal properties of these contextual sounds play a large role in recognition of human speech. Historically, most research on both speech perception and sound perception in general examine sounds out-of-context, or presented individually. Further, these studies have been conducted independently of each other with little connection across labs, across sounds, etc. These approaches slow the progress in understanding how listeners with hearing difficulties use context to recognize speech and how their hearing aids and/or cochlear implants might be modified to improve their perception. This research has three main goals. First, the investigators predict that performance in speech sound recognition experiments will be related when testing the same speech frequencies or the same moments in time, but that performance will not be related in further comparisons across speech frequencies or at different moments in time. Second, the investigators predict that adding background noise will make this contextual speech perception more difficult, and that these difficulties will be more severe for listeners with hearing loss. Third, the investigators predict that cochlear implant users will also use surrounding sounds in their speech recognition, but with key differences than healthy-hearing listeners owing to the sound processing done by their implants. In tandem with these goals, the investigators will use computer models to simulate how neurons respond to speech sounds individually and when surrounded by other sounds.

NCT ID: NCT06176625 Active, not recruiting - Delirium Clinical Trials

Sight and Hearing Investigation Into Effects on Delirium

SHIELD
Start date: January 11, 2023
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

The goal of this observational study is to learn about sensory loss in hospital patients with delirium. The main questions it aims to answer are: - Are hearing and vision loss related to increased risk of having delirium? - Do hearing and vision loss contribute to more severe delirium? - Do sensory loss and/or delirium affect patient satisfaction with hospital care? Participants will be asked to: - answer delirium screening questions, - undergo hearing & vision screenings, and - complete questionnaires about the hospital stay. The second part of this study is a clinical trial. Researchers will compare different hospital units to see if changing communication affects the number of patients with delirium. The main questions it aims to answer are: • Does sharing information about communication and/or providing hearing devices change the number of hospital patients with delirium? Participants in the study will be asked to complete delirium screenings and answer questions about their hearing and communication.

NCT ID: NCT06047639 Completed - Hearing Clinical Trials

Bone Anchored Hearing Implants in Chronic Otitis Media

Start date: August 8, 2020
Phase:
Study type: Observational

The aim of this study is to investigate the cost, functional benefits, and impact on the quality of life of using bone-anchored hearing devices in chronic otitis media patients

NCT ID: NCT05744830 Recruiting - Hearing Clinical Trials

The Effect of a Removable Complete Denture Over One Implant in the Lower Jaw on Hearing Ability

Start date: November 8, 2022
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

The effect of a removable complete denture and the insertion of one implant in the lower jaw and the loading of this implant on the hearing ability of patients will be studied, so the hearing ability will be measured by using the PTA test for 30 patients in the age of 50-65 years old. The hearing ability measurement will be done in 4 different periods of time. Before and after using the denture, before and after the implant insertion, and after loading the implant with the same complete denture. The implant surgery will be done in two phases: the first is to insert the implant in the bone and cover it by suturing until it integrates with the bone after 3 months, the second is to start the process of loading the implant with the denture.

NCT ID: NCT03694340 Completed - Child Clinical Trials

Optimization of Cochlear Implant MAP-parameters in Children

Start date: October 25, 2018
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

This project will complete a long-term follow up for children that have received cochlear implants (CI) early in life and had their CI's programmed based on objective measurements. At Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, generally, all younger children (0-3 years), the last ten years, had their CI's programmed based on objective measurements. The programming of the CI carried out during the first year after the surgical insertion is done on the foundation of the objective measurements and is generally what the child will live with thereafter. This method also seem to be close to other clinics in Sweden and the rest of the world, however, there are no specific guidelines regarding the how the programming of the CI is to be carried out on small children. To this date there are no studies, to our knowledge, that have confirmed the validity of using these objective measurements and if it is the best for the child. We therefore aim to do a long term follow up on children that have received CI and programmed this way, and study if there would be beneficial to redo the programming when the child is old enough to actively participate. The aim with this project is evaluate how suitable it is to mainly use objective measurements when programming the cochlear implant and, in addition to this, examine if the children's hearing can be improved if the programming is based on the behavioral measurements of sound when the children are old enough to participate in such. It will examine what happens with the end result if the programming foundation differentiates from one another; if there are any measurable differences in hearing skills. The result from this project expects to generate knowledge that is highly important for those working with small children receiving CI's, and by extension it will benefit the children that rely on this device in there every day life.

NCT ID: NCT01162057 Not yet recruiting - Hearing Clinical Trials

The Effect of Hemodialysis on Hearing

Start date: August 2010
Phase: N/A
Study type: Observational

The inner ear contains transporters that are responsible for maintaining a strict homeostatic environment, necessary for transmission and transduction of sound waves. Hemodialysis affects the body's composition including the aspects regulated by these transporters (pH, osmolarity, Na, K). We wish to observe if hemodialysis affects hearing, and if so, by which parameters.

NCT ID: NCT00264407 Completed - Progesterone Clinical Trials

Neural Changes in the Aging Auditory System

Start date: January 2001
Phase: Phase 1
Study type: Observational

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) on hearing in post-menopausal women.
