Filter by:The purpose of this study is to conduct a preliminary evaluation of the efficacy of combined medication and psychotherapy for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). The general goals of the current study are to conduct a late stage treatment development study. The goal of this stage of research is to provide a preliminary answer to the question and to gather data to estimate intervention parameters (e.g., effect size, attrition rates, response rates) that would assist in planning further research.
To determine the safety and efficacy of SEP-225441 (eszopiclone) in subjects with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).
This study will compare the change detected by a standardized rating scale (Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale) scores in the active treatment group as compared to sham (placebo) group after 6 weeks of rTMS treatments. It is hoped that 6 weeks of rTMS treatment will lead to improvement of core symptoms in patients with GAD.
Amplitude changes of the N1 and the N1/P2 ERP component in response to different tone intensities have been suggested as a correlative of central serotonergic activity. A strong loudness dependence amplitude increase (strong intensity dependence) reflects low serotonergic neurotransmission and vice versa. Many researchers assumed that the brain serotonergic activity could influence treatment response of highly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors in depression and anxiety disorders. There are a couple of studies reporting associations of N1 amplitude intensity dependence with response to Citalopram (positive correlation) and Reboxetine (negative correlation) treatment in major depressive disorder patients. But so far there have been no reports about associations between ERP N1 and antidepressant response in GAD patients. So, it would be very interesting to explore the correlations between ERP N1 amplitude change and the Escitalopram treatment responsiveness in GAD patients.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) has high prelevance (up to 8.5%; Roy-Byrne & Wagner, 2004) and leads to functional impairment (Wittchen et al., 2002; Ballenger et al., 2001). Researchers have demonstrated a relationship between attention bias to threatening information and GAD. However, this knowledge has not yet been translated into effective treatments. The goal of this project is develop and test a new computerized treatment for Generalized Anxiety Disorder.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is a psychiatric disease characterized by long-lasting anxiety that is not focused on a specific object or situation. According to the DSM-IV-TR the essential feature of GAD is at least six months of "excessive anxiety and worry" about a variety of events and situations. Anxiety and worry are often accompanied by a variety of physical symptoms like restlessness, being easily fatigued, difficulty concentrating, irritability, muscle tension and disturbed sleep. The high prevalence of GAD in the general population and the severe limitations it causes point out the necessity to find new strategies to treat it in a more efficient way. Within the treatment of GAD, physical (relaxation and controlled breathing), behavioral (visualization and controlled exposure) and cognitive control strategies (challenging negative thoughts) represent a key part of the treatment, even if they are hard to be learned. Given the features of this disease and its pervasive effect on patient's personal, occupational and affective life, we thought it could benefit from an ubiquitous treatment.We suggested, then, to improve the treatment of GAD through the use of a biofeedback enhanced virtual reality (VR) system used for relaxation, controlled exposure and SIT. The use of SIT in the context of GAD is motivated by the acknowledgment that sometimes stressors can't be avoided or altered and then patients can't apply strategies focused on finding solutions. In these instances, coping effort should be directed to emotionally palliative set of responses such as acceptance, reframing and perspective thinking. All these cognitive changes are facilitated if a concomitant relaxation is induced. The treatment involves two virtual reality components: I) an immersive virtual reality system experienced in the therapist's office; II) a mobile exposure system allowing patients to perform the virtual experience in an outpatient setting. The role of the mobile exposure system is the following: - To present and structure emotionally relevant contents in an ubiquitous context. - To verify the compliance of the patient and eventually alert patient/therapist; - To track in real-time the emotional level of the patient and record it for later assessment by the therapist; - To provide a feedback to the patient able to help him in coping with the contents; - To automatically contact the therapist if the emotional level is higher than a preset cut-off value defined by the therapist.
This study will assess whether adding cognitive behavioral therapy to the antidepressant escitalopram is effective in reducing anxiety in older adults with generalized anxiety disorder.
A Multi-Centered Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled, Phase 2, Exploratory Study to Evaluate the Effect of Rufinamide on Anxiety in Patients with Moderate to Severe Generalized Anxiety Disorder.
Does parenting style affect emotion regulation among children who initially demonstrate high levels of fear and anxiety? Although recent correlational research has demonstrated a linkage between parental behaviors, such as excessive intrusiveness, and children's manifestations of fear and anxiety, it is not clear if parenting behaviors directly influence children's ability to regulate these emotions. Alternatively, these parental behaviors may be elicited by children who express fears and anxieties more frequently than other children do. Experimental research designs would offer a more definitive test of these competing explanations of the extant correlational findings. Intervention studies, in particular, can test whether experimentally manipulating current family interaction patterns affects children's ability to regulate emotion. This study provides a preliminary experimental test of the relationship between parental behavior and children's regulation of fear and anxiety. Some 40 clinically anxious youth, aged 6-13, were randomly assigned to a family intervention program for childhood anxiety problems, which includes extensive parent communication training, or a child intervention program without parent-training. By comparing these two interventions, we tested if it was possible to improve parenting behaviors—such as intrusiveness—through intensive parent-training, above and beyond the effects of involving children in a child intervention program. We then tested the impact of this change in parental behaviors on children's ability to regulate fear and anxiety. We hypothesized that parent-training would reduce intrusiveness, which would in turn improve children's anxiety outcomes.
The study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a cognitive behaviour therapy program (FRIENDS) for anxiety disorders in children aged 8-15 years who have been referred to child and adolescent mental health clinics in Western Norway.
