Filter by:Osteoporosis weakens bones with age, increasing fracture risk. Exercise improves physical function and reduces falls, crucial for preventing osteoporotic fractures, especially with balance, resistance, and multi-component training. Agility exercise, integrating various aspects like aerobic, strength, balance, and cognitive tasks, is promising for fall prevention in older adults, though its effectiveness in osteoporosis is not extensively studied. This study compares agility and resistance exercise impacts on physical function and balance stability in postmenopausal osteoporosis. Fifty-one women (average age: 68±6.3y, BMI: 22.3±2.7 kg/m2) were divided into agility exercise (AG), resistance exercise (RG), and control groups (CG) through purposive sampling. AG and RG received added intervention training once a week for 2 hours over 12 weeks. Main outcomes included physical function and balance stability measured through various tests.
Fall prevention is an essential element in ensuring safe care for paediatric patients. The first step in building a risk reduction programme is the adoption of an assessment tool to identify those most at risk at an early stage. From October 2014 to date, a study has been conducted for the linguistic-cultural validation of the Humpty Dumpty Fall Scale (HDFS) in the Italian context, through a multicentre survey with the help of the Clinical Risk Management Group of the Region of Tuscany. The objective of this study is the validation of the new Humpty Dumpty Fall Scale defined as Speedy Meyer-Fall Scale (SMFS) by assessing the comprehension and validity of the scale and items via Content Validity Index (SCVI and ICVI) estimation of inter-item reliability (Crombach's alpha), inter-rater reliability (Cohen's K), sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV and ROC curve.
This study is designed to investigate the effect of adding trunk and upper extremity exercises in traditional and mobile game formats to the Otago exercise program on balance performance, fall risk, and fear in older adults. A randomized controlled, cross-sectional, single-blind (evaluator) study will be conducted with 36 older adults aged 65 and older enrolled at Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University (MSKÜ) Elderly Studies Application and Research Center. Participants will be divided into three randomized groups: control group (12 individuals receiving the Otago exercise program), study group 1 (12 individuals receiving additional trunk and upper extremity exercises with traditional methods added to the Otago exercise program), and study group 2 (12 individuals receiving additional trunk and upper extremity exercises with mobile game method added to the Otago exercise program). Participant demographics informations will be recorded in Form 1. Participants' cognitive functions , levels of independence in activities of daily living, fall risk , and fear of falling will be evaluated. Balance performance will be assessed using the Mini Balance Evaluation Systems Test (Mini-BESTest), portable computerized kinetic balance measurement (SportKAT 650-TS), "5 Times Sit-to-Stand" and "Four-Stage Balance Test" from the Otago Exercise Program. Participants' body sway will be assessed simultaneously with the second part of the Mini-BESTest using a mobile application. All assessments will be conducted by a researcher blinded to the exercises, both before and after the exercises, in a one-on-one face-to-face setting. In the exercise protocol, a personalized, home-based, 30-minute Otago exercise program consisting of strength, balance, and walking exercises performed three times a week will be implemented for 8 weeks with home visits and telerehabilitation sessions (via Videoconferencing) under the supervision of the responsible researcher. In addition to the Otago exercise program, trunk and upper extremity exercises (totaling 45 minutes) will be implemented in study group 1 using traditional methods and in study group 2 using the mobile game method. Telerehabilitation sessions will be conducted via an Android-based tablet if the study is supported by Tübitak 1002 A Rapid Support Module. Individual smartphones of participants will be used if the study is not supported. All questionnaires, scales, and tests used in the initial assessments will be repeated at the end of the 8-week exercise protocol for all participants.
Background: Falls and fall-related injuries among older adults are a significant health problem that results in injuries, prolonged hospitalisation, reduced mobility, and poorer quality of life. Previous falls prevention programs have demonstrated the effectiveness of multi-component falls prevention interventions in improving functional outcomes and reducing falls compared to usual care. A previous trial of a tailored multi-component falls intervention program for older adults recruited from the emergency department (SAFE) found that there is significant heterogeneity in terms of falls risk factors in high falls risk older adults. Thus, the effectiveness of SAFE in participants with poorer cognitive function or had more comorbidities were less effective and less cost-effective. Therefore, the aim of this trial is to demonstrate the effectiveness of a technology-enhanced, multi-domain and multi-component falls prevention intervention in reducing number of fallers and injurious fallers among older adults with elevated fall risk. Hypothesis: Using novel wearable technologies to a) identify older adults who are at high risk of falls and more likely to benefit from a multi-component intervention and b) tailor the exercise and educational components by giving individualized biofeedback will improve the effectiveness of an enhanced multi-domain, multi-component falls intervention program for community dwelling older adults. Methodology: This study is a randomized controlled trial aimed at demonstrating the effectiveness of a technology-enhanced, multi-domain and multi-component falls prevention intervention (SAFE-TECH) in community- dwelling older adults with elevated fall risk compared with usual care. Participants in both arms are selected based on questionnaire based and wearable sensor based predictions of their falls risk. Participants in the intervention arm will receive a 12-week active falls intervention program consisting of exercise and educational components, with detailed biofeedback of their functional status.
Using a Virtual Reality (VR) games-based application is as an innovative falls prevention technology in an aged care service. The VR intervention has promising effects on improving the physical and balance performances in the older adults.The study explored and evaluated the effects of VR activity-based training on falls prevention among community-dwelling older adults with mild cognitive impairment.
Study Description: The investigators propose to extend earlier research conducted during a feasibility study (Strong Foundations 1.0) by enrolling participants who have a greater risk for falling (x4 cohorts of up to 15 individuals) and from a lower socio-economic status (x4 cohorts of up to 15 individuals), and by collecting high quality laboratory based measures of balance, posture, and strength to better determine the effectiveness of the program and its suitability for widespread deployment. Additionally, the investigators hope to showcase it is feasible to sustain programmatic gains with ongoing digitally delivered content by combining cohorts into a larger group that continues to practice the foundational exercises taught during the 12-week initial program.
After developing and pilot testing the training program, including the CogBals software, a 3-arm, single-blinded, randomized controlled trial is used to recruit 84 participants and then randomly allocated to the cognitive and balance dual task training group (COG&BAL), the balance training group (BAL), and the treatment as usual group. The first two training groups (COG&BAL, BAL) receive training for 60 minutes in a group format, 2 times weekly, for 12 weeks. All participants will be assessed at baseline and posttest. The primary outcome is balance function and secondary outcomes are cognitive functions and the muscular endurance of lower extremities.
This study focuses on administering home-based exercises which include balance, strength, endurance, and mobility training to pre-frail subjects via one of the 3 intervention arms. These evidence-based home exercises are performed two times a week for 12 weeks (3 months). A follow-up assessment will be conducted at the end of 9 months after 6 months maintenance phase.
With aging, the decrease in muscle strength in the musculoskeletal system , body biomechanics and posture changes and the risk of falling increase. The greatest danger of falling in this population is risky and the other danger is that it causes fractures, creates physical and psychological trauma, and increases the need for long-term care and health services. Increasing exercise efficiency for balance and preventing falls are extremely important for physical and cognitive health. İn recent years ,the''Action Observation''approach has been used as an added method to treatments to increase the effectiveness of exercise.Action observation ; it is a cognitive training that triggers motor learning by observing the desired activity and positively affects learning. The aim of the study : To investigate the effects of exercises on balance and fall risk together with action observation in individuals over 65 years of age . The researchers planned to combine action observation and traditional balance exercises as a group training and compare them with the control group . The hypothesis of the research is that action observation(AO) will be more useful in maintaining balance and preventing the risk of falling. Materials and methods of the research:Participants will consist of volunteers over 65 years of age(65-80 years old ). 60 participants to be selected randomly. The participants will be randomly assigned 2 groups. Experimental group :( 30 participants ) Action observation+ exercise combination Control group :( 30 participants ) will only exercise Study protocol:The randomized experimental and control group will study 3 days per week for a total of 8 weeks .Exercises difficulty;Borg Scale(0-10):It will be modarate. Evaluation:All evaluations will be made as a Pre-test/Post-test. The detailed descriptions and characteristics of the participants will be summarized at baseline and after 8 weeks, and the differences between groups, intergroup differences will be statistically evaluated.
One third of adults over 65 and 50% of adults above 80 years old fall at list once a year. In some cases, falls result in fractures, hospitalization, functional limitations, depression, morbidity and mortality. Strong evidence support exercise training programs for fall prevention, while several studies examined the effect of perturbation training on risk of fall. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a perturbation training program with unexpected perturbation using balance tutor on falls and injuries among elderly at risk of falling, compared to balance and strengthening exercise.
