Influence of Educational Stimuli From the Pé-de-Meia Program on Delay Discounting Propensity

The goal of this randomized clinical trial is to investigate how the Stay-and-Complete School Incentive Savings, part of the Pé-de-Meia Program, affects decision-making among low-income high school students, particularly their tendency towards delay discounting. This concept describes the preference for immediate gratifications over larger future rewards. The main questions it seeks to answer are: Can exposure to the specific educational stimuli of the Pé-de-Meia Program alter students' propensity for delay discounting? How do different levels of delay discounting influence students' decision-making regarding their studies and the utilization of the program's incentives? Participants will: Engage in a modified version of the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), a computerized game that simulates decision-making under uncertainty, adapted to reflect the stimuli and choices related to the Pé-de-Meia Program. Complete questionnaires that measure their propensity for delay discounting and gather demographic and socioeconomic information. Researchers will compare the outcomes among groups of students exposed to different types of stimuli (aligned with the program's objectives, contrasting, and a control group without modifications) to see if the specific financial and educational incentives of the Pé-de-Meia Program influence how students value immediate rewards compared to future benefits. This study is expected to contribute to the improvement of public educational policies, encouraging school retention and promoting the educational success of low-income adolescents.

The Study of Delay Discounting Among Beneficiaries of the Pé-de-Meia Program

The aim of this observational study is to explore how the "Pé-de-Meia" Program, a policy of the Brazilian Federal Government designed to encourage the retention and completion of studies by students from low-income families, affects both the students' tendency towards delay discounting and their academic performance. The study seeks to answer the following questions: How does the "Pé-de-Meia" Program affect the students' propensity for delay discounting? Is there a relationship between the level of delay discounting among students, their academic performance, and school attendance? Participants in the study, high school students enrolled in the "Pé-de-Meia" Program, will undergo assessments to measure their level of delay discounting. The academic performance and school attendance of the participants will be monitored and analyzed in relation to their propensity for delay discounting

An Assessment of Cognitive Improvement Training Among Mid-life Individuals

Many health-relevant decisions involve intertemporal (now vs. later) tradeoffs. Extensive literature indicates that many negative health and financial consequences suffered in mid-life are linked to adversity and disadvantage during early developmental periods of life. Individuals who continue to engage in these types of unhealthy behaviors despite awareness of the health consequences are exhibiting an inability to delay gratification. Delay discounting (DD) is quantified in human studies by determining the rate at which an individual discounts a delayed reward, while executive function (EF) is defined as the set of cognitive processes that are responsible for helping individuals manage life tasks and achieve goals. This research will attempt to reduce DD via EF training in a population of mid-life individuals with risk factors established during early-life disadvantage.
