Clinical Trial Summary

Patient safety, which is an important concept in terms of providing effective and high-quality health care, is defined as "preventing health care errors and eliminating or reducing patient damage caused by health care errors". Worldwide, adverse events from unsafe care are estimated to be one of the 10 leading causes of death and disability. Ineffective communication between healthcare professionals, which is among the factors that cause errors related to patient safety, is reported as one of the factors that have the most impact on medical errors and unintentional patient harm. Studies show that ineffective communication between healthcare professionals may be responsible for up to 80% of all preventable adverse events rather than the patient's medical condition. Considering the number of lawsuits and cost increase due to errors that violate patient safety, it is stated that medical errors are higher especially in the field of perinatology. In studies conducted, errors in the communication process were identified as the main cause in 72% of all perinatal deaths. The perinatal period is a physiological process. However, undesirable events can develop suddenly and rapidly, and this situation threatens both pregnant/mother and fetus/newborn health. Therefore, it is necessary to maintain uninterrupted communication in this area. It is very important for students to acquire these communication skills effectively before they graduate. Therefore, this research; In order to determine the effect of professional communication training among health professionals to be given to nursing students on the professional communication skills of students, a parallel-group was planned as a randomized controlled trial. The study is planned to be conducted in Hacettepe University Nursing Faculty. Research data will be collected using the Student Introductory Information Form, Effective Communication Skills Among Healthcare Professionals Evaluation Form, and Self-Assessment Form for Effective Communication among Healthcare Professionals. Nursing students who meet the inclusion criteria will be included in the research. Students will be divided into 2 groups as the experimental and the control group. Students in the experimental group will be given training on effective communication among health professionals. No training will be given to the control group.

Clinical Trial Description

- A student representative will be interviewed in order to reach fourth-year students who are studying at Hacettepe University Faculty of Nursing and have taken the Obstetrics-Gynecology Nursing course. Students will be informed about the purpose, process, and web-based education of the research and they will be invited to the research. An online information meeting about the research will be held by meeting with students who are interested in the research on a suitable day and time. - Students participating in the research will fill out the Student Introductory Information Form and will communicate with the nurse and physician by participating in the standard participant practice using two different pre-test cases. This practice of the students will be evaluated by using the "Effective Communication Skills Among Health Professionals Evaluation Form". After the practice, students will evaluate themselves by completing the "Effective Communication Skills Between Health Professionals Self-Assessment Form". - Intervention and control groups will be formed by randomization by analyzing the data obtained from the pre-test. Intervention Group •Theoretical Training A 1-hour communication training consisting of a single session will be given to the students in the intervention group. Within the scope of communication training, the importance of communication between healthcare professionals in terms of patient safety, the tools used in communication, the importance of communication in the perinatal area, and the 'Language, Introduction and Involvement, Situation, Transfer, Evidences, New action, Mind out, and Ensure (LISTEN2ME)' communication approach will be discussed. •Video Screening and Discussion A total of 4 videos will be prepared in order to discuss the communication process with the students via video. Two of the videos will be for communication with the nurse, One of the videos will be prepared in a way that reflects the wrong and one of the correct communication process. Similarly, 2 videos will be prepared for communication with the physician. All of the videos will be discussed with the students in the intervention group in terms of the communication process. •Standard Participant Practice Students will participate in the standard participant practice in pairs. While one student performs the standard participant practice, the other student will observe. One of the standard participant practices will include communication with the nurse and the other with the physician. After the practice of both students is completed, two students will be taken to the analysis session together. Control Group: No training will be given to the control group. •After the communication training is completed, all students in the intervention and control groups will participate in the standard participant practice for the post-test cases (the same cases were used for the pre-test and post-test). This practice of the students will be evaluated by using the "Effective Communication Skills Among Health Professionals Evaluation Form". After the practice, students will evaluate themselves by completing the "Effective Communication Skills Between Health Professionals Self-Assessment Form". ;
