Bendamustine and Mitoxantrone in Treating Patients With Relapsed or Refractory Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as bendamustine and mitoxantrone, work in different ways to stop the growth of cancer cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Giving more than one drug (combination chemotherapy) may kill more cancer cells. PURPOSE: This phase II trial is studying how well giving bendamustine together with mitoxantrone works in treating patients with relapsed or refractory B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Sometimes, the cancer may not need treatment until it progresses. In this case, observation may be sufficient. It is not yet known whether fludarabine is more effective than observation in treating chronic lymphocytic leukemia. PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying fludarabine to see how well it works compared to observation only in treating patients with stage 0, stage I, or stage II B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Adjuvant I.V. Iron Therapy During Erythropoetin Treatment of Anemic Patients With Lymphoproliferative Disorders.

This is a multi-center open label, randomized phase-3 study with stratification according to diagnosis and baseline serum-EPO level. The correction of mild or moderate anemia and the effect on iron kinetics by the rHuEPO treatment with or without intravenous iron supplementation in anemic patients with LPD not receiving antineoplastic therapy will be studied. The study will be performed according to the ICH-GCP guidelines. In order to be eligible, the patient must consent in writing that he/she agrees to participate in the study. The patient recruitment period is estimated to be no longer than 18 months.
