Filter by:Children and adolescents experiencing gender dysphoria feel increased distress with the onset of puberty. Gender clinics treat these young adolescents by "blocking" puberty using gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist medications. This has the possibility of impacting bone development as sex steroids are important to bone mass development. In this multi-site study, the investigators will examine bone marrow composition (by MRI) in 40 transgender youth and bone density and body composition before/after pubertal blockade compared to healthy participants.
The bone age of the hand and wrist will be assessed with X-rays in more than 20,000 healthy children age 3-18 years old recruited in 28 sites from 14 province.The bone mineral density (BMD) will be measured as well.
Obesity during adolescence, a critical time for bone development, may impair mineral accrual and reduce bone strength, leading to greater fracture risk during adolescence and later in life. This study seeks to determine the effect of obesity and accompanying metabolic changes (insulin resistance and inflammation) on bone mineral accrual and related changes in structure and strength in young girls. The information is critical to developing effective prevention strategies to counter the linked risks of obesity and osteoporosis, both major public health concerns.

School based educational intervention to educate on bone health among Hispanic, Asian or non-Hispanic white girls between 10-13 years with end points of knowledge gained, calcium intake and bone density in . The hypothesis was that the educational program would increase knowledge, improve dairy food and calcium consumption and enhance bone health in this population. A secondary hypothesis was that lactose maldigestion would be an impediment to improved dairy food consumption.
