View clinical trials related to Beta-Thalassemia.
Filter by:Patients with transfusion dependent Beta Thalassemia suffer from a high incidence of Hepatitis C infection especially in developed countries as Egypt. In our patients we also found a high correlation between hepatitic C infection and Liver fibrosis. in this study we offer our patients treatment with Direct antiviral drugs and assessed the degree of fibrosis before and after treatment. We tested Hyalornic acid as a predictor of the degree of fibrosis before and after treatment.
Patient with thalassemia major have many endocrine diseases, such as hypopituitarism, hypothyroidism, hypoparathyroidis, osteoporosis, and etc.. These problems may be due to anemia itself or related to iron deposition. This study aimed to investigate the endocrine aspect of thalassemia major patients in Taiwan in order to introduce early intervention or treatment in the future.
The accumulation of unpaired α-globin chains in β-thalassemia major patients may clinically create ineffective erythropoiesis, hemolysis, and chronic anemia. Multiple blood transfusions and iron overload cause cellular oxidative damage. However, α-tocopherol, an antioxidant, has been known as a potent scavenger of lipid radicals in the red cell membrane of β-thalassemia major patient. By this randomized controlled trial, the investigators would like to evaluate the effects of α-tocopherol in hemolysis and oxidative stress on the red cell membrane of β-thalassemia major.
The aim of this study was to determine the anthropometric measurements in transfusion-dependent β-thalassemia children in Pakistan. The secondary aim was to correlate serum ferritin with the physical growth
Background: Blood disorders like sickle cell disease and malaria affect many people around the world. Researchers want to learn more about blood disorders. To do this, they need to collect biological samples from people with blood disorders. They also need to collect samples from healthy people. Objective: To collect samples to use for research on blood disorders. Eligibility: People ages 18-70 who have blood disorders. Healthy volunteers without blood disorders are also needed. Design: Participants will be screened with a medical history, physical exam, and blood and urine tests. Participants will give one or more samples. They will give them over 5 years. They can choose not to give any of the samples: Saliva: Participants will spit into a tube. They may also have the inside of their mouth swabbed. Urine: Participants will urinate into a cup. Blood: Blood will be taken through a needle in the participant s arm. Fat samples: An area on the participant s belly or buttock will be numbed. A small cut will be made into the skin and a small piece of fat removed. Mucus and cells from the lungs: The participant will be sedated. A flexible tube will be inserted through the nose or mouth into the lung airways. These participants will also have a physical exam, chest x-ray, and heart tests after the procedure. ...
to study the frequency and pattern of dermatological abnormalities in egyptian childern with beta thalassemia.relationof abnormalities to duration of disease and frequency of transfusion
It is known that postprandial hyperglycemia increases the cardiometabolic risk in both diabetic and non-diabetic patients. Moreover, there is insufficient data on the effectiveness of exercise on preventing Type II diabetes mellitus in individuals with insulin resistance and prediabetes. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of resistance exercise in limiting postprandial hyperglycemia and the necessity of prescribing medication particularly in patients with beta-thalassemia and insulin resistance.
Beta-thalassemias are hereditary blood disorders caused by reduced or absent synthesis of hemoglobin beta chains, with variable outcomes ranging from severe anemia to clinically asymptomatic individuals. Treatment is symptomatic and thalassemia is a major unmet medical need. Survival is increased, even in patients needing transfusions, in comparison with a few years ago, but the quality of life is poor for many patients. In some patients, an anomalous expression of gamma-globin genes has been observed, with a consequent rise in Fetal Hemoglobin levels. The patients displaying a clinical phenotype known as Hereditary Persistence of Fetal Hemoglobin (HPFH) exhibit a positive clinical status. To mimick HPFH, several compounds able to induce expression of fetal hemoglobins (HbF) have been evaluated. Within this framework, sirolimus is particularly interesting as an inducer of HbF. It has been used for many years for different indications and the available preclinical evidence warrant the start of a clinical development plan in thalassemia. The investigators propose a clinical trial in beta-thalassemia patients, designed to evaluate the effect of sirolimus on several parameters related to red blood cell status and to the level of HbF in particular, as a first step for the full clinical development in this new indication.

Beta-thalassemia represents a group of recessive inherited hemoglobin disorders characterized by reduced synthesis of β-globin chain. The homozygous state (β-thalassemia major) "TM" results in severe anemia, which needs regular blood transfusion . The life expectancy in patients with TM has increased due to therapeutically management, such as frequent transfusion, desferal administration and bone marrow transplantation. Diabetes is clinically characterized by hyperglycemia due to either low circulating concentrations of, or decreased sensitivity to, insulin. Patients with TM typically exhibit β-cell or insulin insufficiency, and may develop diabetes due to toxic levels of iron in their pancreas, one of the strongest predictors of β-cell destruction. By contrast, hyperinsulinemia, secondary to insulin resistance, with normal glucose tolerance has also been observed. The pathogenic mechanisms leading from siderosis to diabetes are poorly understood.
