Filter by:This study aims to investigate the ability of reading emotions by the Eyes task in adults with ASD, and examine the gazing pattern and frontal activation during the task. We plan to recruit 50 adults with ASD and 50 typically-developing adults. Eye-tracking and frontal activation (measured by functional near-infrared spectroscopy) will be examined during the Eyes task.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) mainly has social and interaction related problems, and repetitive behaviors or interests. In recent years, studies showed that Routine-Based Early Intervention(RBEI) could increase children's development and enhance skills maintenance. Using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health for Children and Youth (ICF-CY) to assess children can identify different factors under systematic analysis, then improving children's physical functions and self-care abilities. Therefore, this study will design RBEI programs for autistic children, and use ICF-CY to assess the efficacy of RBEIin body function, body structure, and participation for children with autism.
Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) comprises a complex group of disorders of neuronal development characterized by social and communication impairment along with presence of repetitive and restrictive behaviors. Emerging evidences support the gut-brain axis and further microbiota-gut-brain axis. Elevated prevalence of gastrointestinal (GI) dysfunction in individuals with ASD suggested that targeting gut may benefit patients with ASD. Lactobacillus plantarum PS128 (PS128) was reported to be a psychobiotic in several animal studies which modulated the levels of neurotransmitters in different brain areas. The current randomized, placebo-controlled trial was conducted to investigate the psychophysiological effects of PS128 in preschool children with ASD.
The aim of this study is to assess the efficiency of early treatment for ASD children 5 years after initial treatment. The early treatment implemented was 12 hours per week of ESDM versus treatment as usual during 2 years. This was done as an RCT, called IDEA. Children will now be included in IDEA-2 SCOLA, a three year follow up study.
This research study, Personalized, Responsive Intervention Sequences for Minimally Verbal Children with Autism (PRISM), is designed to maximize language outcomes for limited-language preschoolers, thereby lowering the risk of being classified as "minimally verbal" at age 6, by empirically developing a two-stage, 20-week adaptive intervention approach in a real world community settings. If found efficacious, the adaptive intervention design will capitalize on the heterogeneity and evolving status of children with ASD by providing the best intervention (DTT, JASPER and CET) for children who need it (leading to individualized sequences of intervention), only when it is needed (potentially reducing burden on children).
Animal-Assisted Interventions (AAI) can increase social behavior in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), although the mechanism by which this occurs remains elusive. The central goal of this project is to identify the mechanisms involved in the social-enhancing effect of dogs on children with ASD. The investigators will incorporate therapy dogs into an established evidence-based, group social skills instruction program for children with ASD, using a controlled experimental design with between- and within- subject comparisons and physiological and behavioral outcome measures. The investigators predict therapy dogs to have a specific and measurable effect on children's social behavior and that this effect is gained through identifiable mechanisms. Specifically, the investigators hypothesize that (1) an integration of therapy dogs into group social skills instruction will result in reduced stress and improved social behavior compare to traditional group instruction; (2) repeated exposure to the therapy dog across sessions will increase a child's preference for spending time with the dog and will increase the social-enhancing effects of the dog; and (3) that the therapists will experience less stress, engage in more social and affiliative behavior towards the children, and deliver higher quality instruction during sessions that include dogs. The investigators will enroll 72 children with ASD into group social skills instruction classes taught by 6 therapists. Each child will experience a 10-week, 8-student class in which either (a) the first 5 weeks will involve a therapy dog, (b) the last 5 weeks will involve the therapy dog, or (c) the class will not involve a therapy dog. The therapists will teach the courses repeatedly across the three cycles of the program with different children, rotating through each condition. Social behavior, stress behavior, heart rate, electrodermal activity, and salivary cortisol concentrations of children and therapists will be assessed and compared across conditions. The direction of the children's social behavior towards the dog and peers and the changes in quality of instruction of therapists during dog sessions compared to no-dog sessions will also be assessed. The outcomes of this research will lead to significant enhancements in current interventions for individuals with ASD.
Health and well being of children are inextricably linked to the physical, emotional and psychological of their parents. Autism Spectrum Disorder is one of the neurological developmental disorders characterized by moderate to severe impairments in social interactions, language, and cognitive development, as well as included repetitive behaviors, restricted interests, and emotional distress. Coping with a stressful situation is classified as one of the most challenges in one's life. The overall aim of this study is to examine the effectiveness of the educational program on parenting stress and coping mechanism among parents of children with ASD in Amman, Jordan at baseline, post-test and at two months follow-up assessment. Two hundred parents of children with Autism spectrum disorder will be assigned to the intervention group (n = 100) and the control group (n = 100). Measures of parent stress and coping mechanism using the parent stress index(PSI) and Brief COPE will administer at pre-, post-treatment, and 2-months follow-up.
The purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of pivotal response training (PRT) in an intensive center-based environment to treat social communication deficits in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
This study consists of a 6-week, open-label, randomized clinical trial study to compare efficacy and tolerability of the natural treatments omega-3 fatty acids, inositol, and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) in the treatment of mood dysregulation in children and adolescents with non-verbal learning disability (NVLD) or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Subjects will include youth ages 5-17 years with a non-verbal learning disability (NVLD) or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and current symptoms of emotional dysregulation.
ADNP, also known as Activity Dependent Neuroprotective Protein, is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder caused by mutations encompassing the ADNP gene on chromosome 20. Clinically, ADNP syndrome is characterized by intellectual disability and global developmental delay. This study seeks to characterize ADNP-related neurodevelopmental disorders using a number of genetic, medical and neuropsychological measures.
