Study to Compare the Effect of a Combination of Cetirizine With Pseudoephedrine Versus Placebo on Symptoms in Patients With Allergic Rhinitis Within/Out of Season

A previous study has shown very clearly that the treatment with the combination of cetirizine and pseudoephedrine is superior to the treatment with the single agents regarding the reduction of symptoms in patients with allergic rhinitis. These data, obtained after controlled pollen exposure out of the pollen season, showed highly reproducible individual responses prior to dosing. It is not clear, however, whether the same results can be obtained during the pollen season, when additional natural pollen exposure may influence the variability of the individual reactions.

Use Cord Blood Single Nucleotide Polymorphism to Predict the Later Development of Atopy and Allergy

The aim of our study was firstly to detect in cord bloods the polymorphism of genes related to atopy and allergic diseases and to examine their mutual interaction and their associations with cord blood IgE and cytokines. After that, in the prospective follow-up visits, we liked to investigate if the measurement of cord blood SNPs of genes related to atopy and allergic diseases was helpful in predicting the development of atopy and allergic diseases later in life.

Effect of an Immunotoxin on Activated Human Macrophages in Those With Allergic Rhinitis or Mild Intermittent Asthma

The primary objective of this study is to isolate macrophages by using bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) for different in vitro experiments. Therefore, following a baseline BAL, allergen, endotoxin, and saline will be instilled into three different lung segments during the first bronchoscopy. After 24 hours during a second bronchoscopy, BAL fluid will be collected in these challenged segments to harvest invaded cells for in vitro experimentation. In addition, segmental bronchial biopsies will be taken to assess the degree of local inflammation.
