The comfort and fit of the residual limb within a prosthetic socket are of primary concern for many amputees. The residual limb is typically covered by nonbreathable and non-thermally conductive materials that can create a warm and ultimately moist environment. The investigators have developed a silicone liner approach to passively conduct heat from the skin using thermally conductive elastomers. A technology that can provide thermal control while retaining adequate suspension, weight, and other prosthetic characteristics would benefit many prosthesis wearers.
This study explored the pattern and type of amputations performed on patients with diabetic foot who were admitted to our institution, as well as the 7-year mortality rate of patients with diabetic foot at the same institution. We believe that our study makes a significant contribution to the literature because it highlights the need for strengthening efforts to decrease the risk of amputation and mortality among patients with diabetic foot, especially in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Veterans with dysvascular lower limb amputation (LLA) have a high fall risk, which persists despite completion of conventional rehabilitation. The presence of fall risk could be a primary reason for the high disability and low quality of life outcomes in this Veteran population. A potential novel intervention for this population is to train performance of tasks that require both physical and cognitive attention (i.e., dual-tasking). Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore relationships between dual-task performance and self-reported falls for Veterans with dysvascular LLA. Further, dual-tasking occurs during everyday life and this project will examine the association between dual-task performance and participation in activities of daily living (basic and instrumental). The results will form the foundation for development and future study of a novel dual-task training program for Veterans with dysvascular LLA.
this project seeks to understand and quantify the effects of powered transtibial prostheses on socket loading and direct measures of residual limb health so as to inform the optimization of prosthesis fit.
A simple weight-bearing exercise has been designed using off-the-shelves devices (Nintendo Wii Balance Board) and centre of pressure (COP) analysis software (Python) for trans-tibial amputees receiving their first prosthesis. A pilot randomised control study will be conducted to check the progress with weight-bearing training using COP-based objective measures. Additionally, gait and functional task performance will be assessed by means of clinical test. Participants will be divided into 2 groups: test group (performing additional weight-bearing exercises) and control group (receiving only conventional training for fitting of initial prosthesis).
People with limb loss receiving inpatient rehabilitation are at greater risk for depression and anxiety, social isolation, and generally have poor quality of life. To proactively address the mental health needs of this population, this study plans to test an innovative psychological group therapy program designed for limb loss inpatients to enhance coping skills, address mental health challenges, and better prepare them to integrate back into the community via a randomized blinded feasibility trial. Since this is a novel intervention, adapted specifically for limb loss, this study will test the feasibility of delivering this inpatient group program to these at-risk individuals to see: if they will participate in the program, what they like/do not like about it, and if there are some early findings suggesting it is effective. Researchers will use these results to improve the psychosocial group program and to further test its effectiveness in a larger clinical study.
This study is conducted to evaluate the efficacy of the Power Knee Mainstream Dynamic compared to passive microprocessor-controlled knees (MPKs) regarding metabolic cost for high active transfemoral amputees.The test is of a single group repeated measures crossover design. The primary endpoint is the difference in MET/HRI-VO2 index between conditions. Subjects are measured on their prescribed device at visit 1, be fitted to the PKM which they wear as their primary prosthesis for one week before coming for visit 2 and being measured again on the PKM.
Liberating Technologies, Inc. (LTI) has developed a dexterous prosthetic fingertip that will be fit onto an i-Digits™ partial hand prosthesis and allow for an additional fine grasp. The device will interface with research participants' existing prostheses and use the same control strategy that is used for their everyday use. Each participant's prosthesis will be restored to their original configuration by the end of their testing period.
This is a Prospective, Double Blinded, Placebo Controlled, Randomized, Cross-over trial using Qbrexza Cloths to treat hyperhidrosis of amputation sites. There is a 2 week screening period where patients will use an activity monitor to establish baseline activity level, then patients will be randomized to receive either Qbrexza cloths or placebo for 4 weeks, then a 2 week washout, and then a 4-week cross-over treatment period.
