Filter by:Amblyopia ("lazy eye") and strabismus (misaligned eyes) are medical eye conditions that combine as the leading causes of preventable vision loss in children. They are irreversible if not detected and corrected by the age of seven, however half of all cases are missed because the conditions do not always manifest themselves and pediatricians are unable to reliably detect the conditions. The current health care system badly needs an accurate and effective approach toward detecting amblyopia and strabismus in preschool children. The study will be conducted in busy, ethnically and racially diverse primary care sites operated by the Kaiser Permanente system and compare the outcomes of testing with a Pediatric Vision Scanner with outcomes the current standard of care.
This is a prospective, randomized, parallel group sham-controlled blinded clinical trial to assess the feasibility and efficacy of transcorneal electrical stimulation (TES) in the improvement of visual function outcomes in adults with amblyopia. The trial will assess the treatment effect of TES to Sham TES in the amblyopic eye of affected patients.
Amblyopia (lazy eye), is the leading treatable cause of vision loss in childhood. Uncorrected refractive errors (ie farsightedness) can lead to difficulties in school. Unfortunately, many children do not receive vision screening until they have already developed irreversible vision problems. We will conduct a cluster randomized clinical trial in which schools, not individual children, are randomly allocated to receive a kindergarten visual screening program or to receive no intervention by the research team (i.e., "care as usual"). We will compare the prevalence of visual problems (and proportion of children with reading problems) when the children are in Grade 2, after allowing for at least one year of treatment.
1. To determine whether a binocular iPad game app is effective in improving visual acuity and reducing interocular suppression in amblyopic children 2. To compare the amount of visual acuity improvement achieved with the binocular game app to the amount achieved with patching (standard treatment for amblyopia)
This was a randomized, masked, controlled study of the effect of a virtual reality, binocular, 3-dimensional video game on visual acuity and stereopsis in adult patients with amblyopia. The trial has been halted as of June 2016 and will not be evaluating any new subjects for enrollment.
This project will assess whether there is a significant difference in compliance with patching in amblyopic patients whose parents are instructed to pinch the superior and inferior edges of the patch before applying (in order to improve comfort) versus patients whose parents are instructed to place the patch evenly around the orbit.
The purpose of the study is to compare the effectiveness of 1 hour/day of binocular game play 7 days per week with 2 hours/day patching 7 days per week in children 5 to <17
Objective: To find out how much visual improvement is possible in severe amblyopia using full-time occlusion therapy with an eye patch and to see if improvement is influenced by the patient's age. Methods: An interventional clinical trial of 115 consecutive cases with unilateral, severe amblyopia was conducted at a tertiary referral center from Jan 2010 to Oct 2012. Patients were divided into three age groups: 3-7 years (n= 38), 8-12 years (n=41), 13-35 years (n=36). After a complete ophthalmological examination by a single ophthalmologist, cases with organic visual loss were excluded; cases with previous part-time occlusion therapy that had failed were included in the study. Patients were given optimal refractive correction for a month, followed by full-time occlusion therapy along with near visual activities for 3-4 hours/day. The therapy was continued until maximum visual recovery was achieved (6/6 Snellen's). Therapy was gradually reduced and stopped. Patients were followed-up regularly for the next 18 months.
The study will evaluate the effect of Reviview™, a dichoptic video display device for administrating a novel treatment protocol for Amblyopia (lazy eye) in kids. The effect of the treatment will be measured by the change from baseline in Visual acuity and in Stereoscopic Vision; and to assess the ease of use of and compliance by the patients.
Electronic eyeglasses, Amblyz™glasses, are a new medical device designed to treat amblyopia, which intermittently become opaque and provide effective occlusion for 50% of the time they are worn. A non-randomized study reported that Amblyz glasses yield an improvement in the amblyopic eye and offer an alternative effective treatment. We are unaware of any randomized clinical trial reports of response to AmblyzTM glasses treatment of amblyopia. Our hypothesis: Amblyz™glasses can improve visual acuity of the amblyopic eye as effective as traditional patching treatment. The primary objective is to determine if AmblyzTM equally treats moderate amblyopia as the standard 2-hour patching treatment and AmblyzTM equally treats severe amblyopia as the standard 6-hour patching treatment. This study is designed to evaluate the effectiveness of a novel amblyopia treatment, AmblyzTM glasses, in treating amblyopia. Moderate amblyopia: Children ages 3 to <8 years with visual acuity of 20/40 to 20/80 in the amblyopic eye will be enrolled and randomized into two groups: 4-hour AmblyzTM glasses treatment group and standard 2-hour patching control group. Severe amblyopia: Children ages 3 to <8 years with visual acuity of 20/100 to 20/400 in the amblyopic eye will be enrolled and randomized into two groups: 12-hour AmblyzTM glasses treatment group and standard 6-hour patching control group.
