Filter by:The goal of this study is to study the effects of the ketone supplement Kenetik compared to placebo (an inactive beverage) on alcohol withdrawal symptoms during the 5 days of clinical alcohol withdrawal management treatment at the Caron Treatment Center.
The primary aims of this project are to determine the feasibility and acceptability of recruiting and retaining young adult binge drinkers online and using text messaging to provide weekly Goal Support (GS) or weekly GS + Coaching for Context-specific Peer Support (CCPS) on alcohol consumption. The secondary aims will determine effect sizes for GS and GS+CCPS groups relative to controls on alcohol consumption at 6- and 12-weeks to inform design of an adequately-powered trial.
The current project uses a web-based program called the Expectancy Challenge Alcohol Literacy Curriculum (ECALC) to reduce alcohol use and associated harms among college students. Participants complete the interactive program in 50 minutes, and then provide daily, real-time data on expectancies and alcohol use for 3 weeks after intervention, and again for one week at 13 and 25 weeks after intervention. One group will also receive biweekly boosters delivered via smart phone to assess their impact on intervention decay over time. It is hypothesized that ECALC effects may decay over time, and that biweekly boosters will prevent this decay. Access to the ECALC is available on request from the principal investigator.
This study is conducted to examine the effect of a psychotherapy model that is expected to affect alcohol cravings in adults aged 18-65 years who are being treated for alcohol use disorder at a clinic. The psychotherapy intervention is expected to affect other variables such as clinical symptom level, self-efficacy level, and functionality level. This protocol is called addiction-focused eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (addiction-focused EMDR). Patients found suitable for the study will be divided into experimental and control groups. The intervention will be applied to the experimental group and not to the control group. At the end of the intervention, the effect of the intervention primarily on the level of craving will be compared with that of the control group. The intervention is expected to reduce the level of craving. The intervention is expected to have an impact on the other variables mentioned as well.
Scalable approaches are needed to support patients identified in the emergency department as unhealthy alcohol users and text messaging intervention approaches are a promising solution. However, the process of providers making text messing interventions for unhealthy alcohol use available to patients in an efficient way within already busy and overburdened emergency department workflows (i.e., implementation in real-world emergency department settings) and patients adopting them remains a new area of research. Study investigators will examine barriers and facilitators to the adoption of text messaging interventions for unhealthy alcohol use in emergency departments and use a stakeholder-engaged process to develop and test practical implementation strategies that could provide much needed support to patients who screen positive while reducing burden on emergency departments.
Heavy episodic drinking and sexual assault are problematic on college campuses. This study includes a randomized controlled trial of Positive Change (+Change), an integrated alcohol and sexual assault prevention program, compared to an attention-matched control condition across two universities in reducing alcohol use, sexual assault victimization, sexual assault perpetration, and increasing sexual assault bystander intervention. This study will also test the efficacy of +Change plus Booster session, an identical version of +Change delivered 6 months after the baseline, compared to +Change alone in long-term reductions in alcohol use, sexual assault victimization, sexual assault perpetration, and increases in sexual assault bystander intervention. This research is the next step of a NIAAA-funded planning grant (R34AA025691).
The current project uses a brief mobile intervention, grounded in Deviance Regulation Theory, to deliver in-the-moment messaging meant to increase responsible drinking among college students. Participants receive positive messages about individuals that use responsible drinking behaviors or negative messages about individuals that do not use responsible drinking behaviors. It is hypothesized that these messages delivered at appropriate times will differentially affect use of responsible drinking behaviors as a function of individual beliefs about the prevalence of responsible drinking among peers.
Background: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a major public health problem. In the U.S., 16 to 18 million adults have an AUD. Researchers want to test an assessment tool called the ANA. It uses self-report and behavioral measures to assess 3 neuroscience domains of addiction. They hope to better understand, manage, prevent, and treat AUD. Objective: To learn how people s brains function related to their drinking. Eligibility: People ages 18 years and older who have enrolled in NIAAA natural history study 14-AA-0181. Design: Participants will complete surveys and tasks on a computer. The surveys and tasks assess a range of aspects of thinking and making decisions. The surveys and tasks also assess behaviors and feelings about alcohol and other rewards, and negative emotions. Participants will spend 90 minutes on the computer. Then they will take a break. In total, they will spend 4 blocks of time on the computer. Each block will last 90 minutes. They will take a break in between each block of time. They can take more breaks if needed. Outpatient participants and healthy volunteers will complete this study in 1 visit. It will last about 6 hours. A second visit may be scheduled if needed. Outpatient participants will take a breath alcohol test. If their test is positive, their visit may be rescheduled or they may be withdrawn from the study. Inpatient participants will complete this study over several days. Data collected from participants in this study may be combined and analyzed with their data from NIAAA study 14-AA-0181 and/or NIAAA imaging study 14-AA-0080.
Alcohol use disorder is characterized by widespread neurocognitive impairments, however despite substantial advances in the intervention and treatment of alcohol use disorders, exceptionally few studies have been directed to improving these deficits. This project leverages computerized cognitive training, applied as an adjunct to inpatient treatment, to enhance neurocognitive recovery. This project informs public health and future intervention efforts by interrogating factors critical to intervention efficacy and clarifying relationships between neurocognitive recovery and treatment outcomes, including post-discharge alcohol consumption.
The primary goal of this study is to determine whether change in alcohol use among college students can be transmitted through social network ties to other members in the network. Members of one college class at a northeastern university will be enrolled in a longitudinal study in which they will provide self-reported behavioral information and information about their social ties to others in their college class. A subset of heavy drinking participants will be asked to meet in person to complete an interview about their alcohol use - called a Brief Motivational Interview. There is evidence that this sort of interview can reduce harmful alcohol use. The investigators expect that following the Brief Motivational Interview others in their friendship clusters will show reduced harm associated with alcohol use as well.
