Filter by:Deliberate self-harm (DSH) is a prevalent behaviour among adolescents but there is no current recommendation for an efficacious treatment. Emotion regulation group therapy (ERGT) is a brief treatment for DSH with a well-documented utility and feasibility in the adult population, and an adapted version for adolescents may provide equal benefits for adolescents, provided adjustments to prevent or decrease social contagion are present. A quantitative feasibility open trial (N=20) followed up by a qualitative interview study will examine the feasibility, acceptability and preliminary effect of ERGT for adolescents.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is a chronic condition characterized by excessive and uncontrollable worry and anxiety. In adolescents, this condition can seriously impact their development, academic performance, and social relationships. In Canada, 3 to 4% of the population (between 0.9% and 2.7% among adolescents) suffers from GAD at any given time in their lives. These young individuals experience a reduced quality of life and are at risk for numerous medical conditions, as well as additional psychological issues. Research suggests that both pharmacological and psychological approaches are effective in treating GAD in the short term. However, psychological treatments appear to offer the greatest long-term benefits. There are a number of effective psychological treatments for GAD, most of which fall under cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) adapted for this age group. In the 1990s, a group of Canadian researchers developed a CBT protocol for GAD that included four components. Data from six clinical trials in adults suggest that one of the four components is particularly important for treatment success: exposing oneself to uncertainty rather than avoiding it in daily life. In other words, learning to tolerate and manage uncertainty seems to be the key to reducing worry and anxiety. Given this discovery, researchers developed a new treatment that exclusively targets intolerance to uncertainty and then adapted it for adolescents: Behavioural Experiments for Intolerance to Uncertainty in Adolescents (EC-IIA). The aim of the current pilot study is to test the effectiveness of EC-IIA in adolescent individuals. A total of 8 participants with a primary diagnosis of GAD will receive EC-IIA and will be evaluated at 4 different times ranging from pre-treatment to a 6-month follow-up. Conditions will be compared in terms of treatment efficacy and mechanisms. Researchers will also examine predictors of change during the 6 months following treatment. The proposed study will produce data on the effectiveness and mechanisms of a treatment for GAD that is less costly, less complex, and easier to disseminate than currently available treatments.
Residential care youth show extensive mental health intervention needs due to history of maltreatment and embedded characteristics of residential placement, leading to harmful and cumulative effects throughout development, linked to internalizing and externalizing difficulties. However, existing interventions show limited suitability and poor randomized effectiveness evaluation. To overcome these shortcomings, a new compassion-based program for adolescents in residential care will be developed. A non-randomized trial will be run, testing the program´s effects over adolescents' psychological functioning and investigating whether changes in compassion are associated with changes over time in mental health difficulties. The moderator effect of age, gender and maltreatment history will be investigated. Findings intend to: improve mental-health of youth in residential care, provide an evidence-based intervention to be delivered in residential care settings, increase empirical support of compassion-based interventions, amplifying its scope of delivery.
The aim of this study is to adapt the Parenting for Lifelong Health for Parents and Teens (PLH) with the Helping Adolescents Thrive Comics in North Macedonia and the Republic of Moldova and conduct a pilot feasibility study of the adapted version. The program will be delivered by ALTERNATIVA in North Macedonia and Health for Youth Association in the Republic of Moldova. The intervention and training materials will be adapted for the local context and languages (Romanian, Macedonian, and Russian). Facilitators and coaches will be trained to deliver the intervention in the fall of 2023. A pre-post pilot study will be conducted testing the feasibility of the program and the assessment measures with caregivers (30 per country) and their 10-14-year-old children (30 per country). This includes examination of outcomes related to implementation fidelity, program acceptability, and preliminary program effectiveness in improving teens' behavioral and emotional problems. This feasibility study is part of a larger implementation science project using the MOST framework (Multiphase Optimization Strategy). This specific protocol is for the preparation phase of MOST (Phase 1). There are two more phases of MOST that will follow: the optimization phase (Phase 2) and the evaluation phase (Phase 3). The results of Phase 1 will be used to inform any changes to the intervention and assessment measures that may be necessary before testing the intervention in Phase 2, which will involve a randomized factorial trial.
The goal of this randomized controlled trial is to determine the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effects of a web-based parent training (Parenting Wisely) augmented with facilitated parent groups (referred to as PWRT). PWRT is designed to prepare parents for the reintegration of their adolescents in the home after intensive psychiatric residential treatment. Researchers will compare PWRT to treatment as usual to determine whether PWRT effects target mechanisms (i.e., family function, social support, parental self-efficacy, parenting practices) and adolescent outcomes (i.e., internalizing and externalizing behaviors, placement restrictiveness).
This study is exploring an animated learning resource that could be used online to promote mental health. It is computer based and delivered in a single session, lasting 30 minutes. It teaches young people about thoughts, feelings, personality and the brain, it includes ideas about "mindsets" - or beliefs about the brain - which may be helpful in day-to-day life. The investigators will use social media to recruit 14-18-year-olds to take part in our research. They will be randomly put into one of two groups - either a group who receive the online session first or a group who receive the session later (at the end of the study). The animated learning resource aims to promote and protect mental health. The investigators predict it might have some benefits for emotional wellbeing, though the investigators do not know for certain. Young people who take part might learn something new or find it rewarding to know they have been part of research which could be used to help promote mental health. It is important to know that this is a research study and not a form of treatment for mental health problems.
Assess the prevalence of medico-psychological characteristics at the time of placement (M0), their appearance / disappearance and during the two years following placement (M12 and M24) by age group in children / adolescents in Child Protective Services and placed full-time in the structures of Seine-Maritime and Eure as well as in nursery in Le Havre or Rouen
This is a naturalistic treatment and follow-up study of youth with bipolar spectrum disorders (BSDs) across four US sites of The Childhood Bipolar Network (CBN). CBN sites have expertise in diagnosing, assessing, and treating BSDs in youth. The primary aims of this study are to (1) identify and reliably diagnose youth (ages 9 to 19 yrs) with full bipolar disorder (BD) and BSDs, and (2) examine predictors (e.g., mood instability, inflammatory marker C-reactive protein) of clinical outcome over a 12 month period. Participating youth will initially complete a screening that includes a structured diagnostic interview and a baseline blood draw to measure inflammatory processes. Youth with BSD and parents (80 families) will be asked to participate in multiple follow up research visits with interviews, rating instruments, and questionnaires. Per established CBN guidelines, study psychiatrists will provide and track medication management and sites will also track psychosocial treatments. This study ultimately aims to further understanding of best practice pediatric BSD psychiatric and psychosocial treatments and development of a standardized and validated set of clinical tools for patient assessment, diagnosis, and tracking.
The purpose of this study is to assess the (cost)effectivity of Equine assisted Therapy in adolescents with Autism Spectrum disorders.
The purpose of the present study is to conduct a pilot randomized clinical trial (RCT) of a parent coaching intervention for parents of youth hospitalized for suicidal ideation, suicide attempt(s), or non-suicidal self-injury. Parents will receive either the parent coaching intervention (which includes safety planning and behavioral parenting skills training with a clinician and assistance with linkage to follow-up care by a case manager) or treatment as usual (TAU) for the inpatient unit. The long-term goal of the research is to determine if augmenting standard inpatient treatment with additional parenting intervention improves youth treatment response on suicide-related outcomes (i.e., suicidal ideation, non-suicidal self-injury, and suicide attempts). The goal of this pilot RCT is to collect preliminary data needed for a larger RCT, including feasibility, acceptability, safety, tolerability, engagement of the presumed mechanism of change (changes in parent emotions and behaviors), and signal detection of any changes in youth suicide-related outcomes.
