Ketone Supplementation in Adolescents Post-Concussion

Adolescent brains undergo rapid and significant changes in structural architecture and functional organization during development. A concussive injury during this developmental period can have substantial physiological and cognitive ramifications. If not adequately managed, adolescent concussions can have profound long-term effects. The purpose of this study is to determine whether ketone supplementation after a concussion will reduce long-term consequences and improve short-term functional status and outcomes in adolescents who have suffered a concussion.

For that purpose, the following factors will be taken into consideration : shoulder internal/external rotators strength, shoulder range of motion, scapular dyskinesis, functional tests (medicine ball throw and upper quarter Y balance test), training load and psychosocial factors (POMS questionnaire).

The Importance of Exercise to Prevent Injuries in Athletes

Introduction: running is one of the most accessible and practiced sports in the world since the 21st century. Unfortunately, the incidence of injuries in the population that practices it is high regardless of experience, although the risk of injury increases in amateur runners. One of the main keys to reduce the incidence of running related injuries may be to improve the ability to reduce the load or impact. For this, there are different strategies such as a gradual increase in the load to run, and exercise within which is muscle strengthening and balance training or proprioception. Objective: to verify the effectiveness of a program of proprioceptive exercises based on the static and dynamic balance for the reduction of lower limb injuries in amateur runners during the competition season.

the Effects of a Nursing Trauma Care Bundle

The Long-term Consequences After Traumatic Brain Injury in the Elderly

A better understanding of the injury patterns, injury severity, risk profiles, consequences and impact of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) in the elderly population is necessary due to the increasing incidence and prevalence of TBI in this population and its high economic impact on society. Therefore, this study aims at describing the long-term consequences of TBI. In order to achieve that goal, injury patterns, injury severity and risk profiles for TBI in the elderly will be mapped. Moreover, a retrospective assessment of brain damage, co-morbidities and post-traumatic history, and a prospective assessment of cognitive functions and quality of life in a 20 years range after TBI will be performed. Finally, a statistical correlation of TBI and different types of neurodegenerative diseases, and an economic costs analysis will be done. All the obtained results will be used to develop a new prognostic tool for the course of the outcomes of TBI in the elderly population.

Thromboembolic Risk Stratification by TRiP(Cast) Score to Guide Physicians in Preventive Treatment Prescriptions for Patients With Lower Limb Trauma Requiring Brace or castING.

Non-surgical traumas to the lower limbs that require orthopedic immobilisation (plaster or splint) are a frequent reason for going to accident and emergency. Due to venous stasis caused by immobilisation, hypercoagulable states and vascular injuries brought on by the trauma, these patients are at risk of developing VTE. For this reason, it is current practice in France and Belgium for the majority of patients to receive a preventative anticoagulant treatment. However, the benefit of this treatment, which has a considerable cost, is controversial. Contrary to French recommendations, American recommendations from 2012 actually advise against systematic preventative medicine, with prevention appearing to be effective primarily in studies with restrictive inclusion criteria. The most significant randomised controlled study on the subject did not show the benefit of low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) on the rate of symptomatic VTE among 1,435 non-selected patients. Therefore, in 2017, the Cochrane meta-analysis concluded that stratification of the risk of thromboembolism is required. For this purpose, in collaboration with the Dutch team of Nemeth et al. we have recently developed a risk stratification model that takes into consideration the patient's characteristics, the type of immobilisation and the severity of the trauma: the TRiP(cast) score. This score is applied retrospectively to a large cohort and demonstrates excellent prognostic performances (AUC (area under the curve) of 0.74). In addition, when using a <7 limits, it makes it possible to identify a large group of patients at very low risk of developing VTE (negative predictive value: 99.2%). The aim of the CASTING study is to prospectively demonstrate the reliability and utility of the TRiP(cast) score by showing that patients with orthopaedic immobilisation of a lower limb who are not receiving preventative treatment on the basis of a TRiP(cast) score of <7 have a very low rate of symptomatic VTE, which allows for a significant reduction in prescriptions of anticoagulants in comparison with prior practices.

Does Improved Ability to Achieve Single Leg Stance Lead to a More Efficient Gait Pattern in Adults With Acquired Brain Injury?

The purpose of the study is to see if a person can stand better on their weaker leg does this improve their walking ability following treatment specifically aimed at standing on leg. This will be compared to people who receive normal physiotherapy treatment not treatment specifically focusing on their ability to stand on their weaker leg. The study is being carried out as part of the researcher's Masters Degree. Participants will be allocated to either the control group (normal physiotherapy treatment) or the experimental group (normal physiotherapy plus physiotherapy working specifically on standing on the weaker leg). There is currently some evidence to show that working specifically on standing on one leg can improve a person's walking but this evidence is limited. Consequently, further research is warranted to identify any links between this treatment approach and walking ability.

Is Kinesio Taping Application Effective on Decreasing Injury Risk for Tennis Players

Research design: The study protocol was approved and required permissions were taken from related tennis club officials, and a written consent was obtained from all the participants' parents about the study. Thirty-three young tennis players aged between 9 and 12 were included in our study. Assessment were done bare (no tape), after 45 min of performance plus kinesio taping application (PP application) and after 45 min of gold text FP kinesio taping application (GT application). We were randomly taped with either PP or GT taping applications using an online random allocation software program (GraphPad Software QuickCalcs, GraphPad Software Inc., La Jolla, CA, USA). Thirty min of rest was given between 2 taping applications after the removal of the first tape. One participant was not able to complete the second taping procedure. PP and GT taping applications were done by using kinesio taping muscle facilitation techniques to Quadriceps and Gastrosoleus muscles. I-shaped tape with a tension of 10-35% was used for muscle facilitation. All patients were assessed by an experienced physiotherapist, and the tapings were done by another experienced physiotherapist in order to provide a single blind structure of the study.
