FES-assisted Gait Intervention in People With Spinal Cord Injury - Pilot Study

A spinal cord injury (SCI) disrupts the communication within the nervous system, leading to limitations in sensorimotor activities such as walking. Regular use of functional electrical stimulation (FES) can result in recovery of voluntary muscle control and muscle strength. Locomotor training with FES may be a promising method to improve gait function. The primary objective of this pilot study is to assess the feasibility and safety of an FES-assisted gait training intervention. Secondary objectives are to assess the effects of an FES-assisted gait training intervention on gait function.

Early diagnosis of acute kidney injury (AKI) in this cohort is of utmost importance, since AKI after LUTX is associated with worsened short and long-term outcomes. To now, early biomarkers of renal failure based on the measurement of cell-cycle arrest proteins have never been tested in this population.

Continuous Passive Motion Versus Heterotopic Ossification

The investigators hypothesize that Heterotopic Ossification (HO) formation can be suppressed if the application of a Continuous Passive Motion (CPM) device can be performed for a substantial amount of time. The investigators will use the following study design: a pilot study with 10 ICU patients receiving CPM and 10 matched cases which will follow a conventional physiotherapy program at the time of the conduction of the study. The comparison between the treatment and referent groups of the outcomes will prove the prophylactic power of CPM against HO.

Effect of a Flexibility Program on the Extensibility of the Hamstrings and the Thoracic and Lumbar Spinal Curvatures

The goal of this clinical trial is to analyse the effect of an intervention program based on hamstring flexibility on the extensibility and curvatures of the spine in dancers. Participants will be dance student with ten years of experience that will undergo a program of stretching four times per week during seven weeks, followed by a detraining period, and a retraining period of three weeks. There will be a pre-test, a post-test and two re-tests after the intervention. The results will be compared with a control group of dancers that will not take part in the stretching program.

Lung isolation techniques are commonly used to facilitate surgical exposure and to provide single-lung ventilation for patients. We have developed an automatic comparison software for 3D reconstruction based on CT data (3DRACS). It reconstructs the trachea and bronchus and compares them with the DLT, predicting the most suitable size and depth of the DLT for lung isolation.The aim of this study was to compare whether the use of 3DRACS to select a DLT size compared to conventional empirical selection methods could improve incidence of DLT intubation success and reduce airway injury.

Third- or fourth-degree perineal tears, collectively known as Obstetric Anal Sphincter Injuries or OASIS, may occur following a vaginal birth. OASIS may have catastrophic consequences, including anal incontinence. Satisfactory primary repair of OASIS is prudent in reducing the risk of maternal morbidity. Although Obstetricians are typically involved in the acute repair of OASIS, General Surgeons may be called to assist in cases of severe anatomical disruption. The investigators have constructed a survey to explore the experience and current practice of Emergency Surgeons in relation to the repair of OASIS. The investigators will gather information including their level of exposure, understanding of current guidelines and confidence in performing these repairs. This will help the investigators identify if further training is required and will enable them to put forward recommendations for future practice. The findings will be presented at conferences and meetings and published in journals.
