Cancer is a devastating disease, presenting an immense disease burden to affected individuals and their families as well as health care systems with 10.9 million new cases and 6.7 million deaths per year. Approximately 12% of human cancers worldwide are caused by oncoviruses infection with more than 80% of cases occurring in the developing world. Tumor viruses can be classified into two groups based on their genetic material; 1. DNA tumor viruses: 1. Small DNA tumor viruses (Papilloma viruses, Polyoma viruses and adenoviruses). 2. Complex DNA tumor viruses (Herpes viruses and Hepatitis B viruses). 2. RNA tumor viruses ( Hepatitis C viruses and human T-cell leukemia virus "HTLV"). There are around 100 types of HPV, with different variations in their genetic and oncogenic potential [5]. Thus, HPV genotypes are divided into 2 groups based on their vulnerability; High risk HPV (HR-HPV) and low risk HPV (LR-HPV). The HPV genome encodes several oncoproteins [5]. E6 and E7 are the main genes responsible for cell transformation mediated by HR-HPV, and they modulate the activities of cellular proteins that regulate the cell cycle. Thus, the presence of E6/E7 can be a specific marker for diagnosing precancerous lesions by HPV. Knowledge of the etiology of virus-mediated carcinogenesis, the networking of pathways involved in the transition from infection to cancer and the risk factors associated with each type of cancer, all suggest prophylactic and therapeutic strategies that may reduce the risk of virus-mediated cancer.
This Phase I dose-escalation trial is designed to evaluate the safety of rapidly generated multivirus-specific T-cell products with antiviral activity against CMV, EBV, adenovirus, HHV6, BK virus, JC virus, and human parainfluenza-3 (HPIV3), derived from eligible HSCT donors. In this trial, we will utilize a rapid generation protocol for broad spectrum multivirus-specific T cells for infusion to recipients of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT), who are at risk of developing EBV, CMV, adenovirus, HHV6, BKV, JCV and/or HPIV3, or with PCR/culture confirmed active infection(s) of EBV, CMV, adenovirus, HHV6, BKV, JCV, and/or HPIV3 that has failed to resolve with at least 14 days of standard antiviral therapy (if available and tolerated). These cells will be derived from HSCT donors, and the study agent will be assessed at each dose for evidence of dose-limiting toxicities (DLT). This study will have two arms: Arm A will include patients who receive prophylactic treatment, and Arm B will include patients who receive VSTs for one or more active infections with targeted viruses. Determination of the study arm will be determined by the patient's clinical status. Study arms will each be analyzed for safety endpoints and secondary endpoints.

Chronic hepatitis C virus infection affects more than 3% (170 million) of the world's population.
ANTOINE is a prospective trial which aims to assess diagnostic performance of 7 biomarkers for the diagnosis of severe bacterial infections (SBI) in children aged from 7 days to 36 months. Fever is a frequent cause of consultation in pediatric emergency departments. Clinical diagnostic tools are rare and discrimination between severe bacterial infection and viral infection is difficult to confidently state. The prevalence of severe bacterial infections (IBS) varies from 10 to 25% according to the studies. Biological markers such as procalcitonin (PCT) and C-reactive protein (CRP) are commonly used in clinical practice. These markers have bacterial specificity but share a wide range of values with viral infections and do not make it possible to exclude or to confirm definitively the diagnosis of IBS. The use of new markers to improve the diagnosis of bacterial and viral infections is increasingly studied in adults. The diagnostic value of these new markers has been demonstrated by associating their dosage with that of CRP for example. This is the case for IP-10, TRAIL or MxA. However, very few pediatric studies have been carried out to date on these new biomarkers. However, in pediatrics, these diagnostic tools based on the combination of biomarkers to discriminate against viral and bacterial infections could be a major help in the suspicions of IBS. 7 biomarkers were selected to be evaluated in this study. This study is designed to determine the best biomarkers combination for the SBI diagnosis on a cohort of 800 patients.

Chronic hepatitis B virus infection is a common condition in Zambia. Among Zambian blood donors, up to 8% are chronically infected with HBV. Despite the burden, awareness of HBV is low in Zambia and the Ministry of Health is in early stages of development of guidelines for HBV screening, treatment, and prevention. The purpose of this clinical cohort study is to characterize the clinical features of chronic HBV infection at UTH and describe treatment and care outcomes. The investigators will enroll 500 adults and follow the cohort for up to 5 years to assess short and long-term viral, serologic, and liver outcomes such as cirrhosis and liver cancer.
This prospective, surveillance study will assess the operational Zika virus definition for use in future Zika purified inactivated virus (ZIKV) vaccine efficacy trials in order to identify Zika virus disease (ZVD) cases among the study cohort.
INTRO-HCV is a multicentre randomised controlled clinical trial that will compare the efficacy of integrated treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus infection (HCV) within medically assisted rehabilitation (MAR) clinics providing opioid substitution therapy (OST) compared to standard treatment. The trial will recruit approximately 250 HCV infected in Bergen and Stavanger and about 1000 in a linked observational study. Intervention: Integrating diagnostic and treatment follow-up for HCV treatment into MAR outpatient clinics in Bergen and Stavanger including testing for HCV, counselling and treatment evaluation and treatment delivery. Primary objectives: Compare the effect of integrated HCV treatment assessed with sustained virological response at 12 weeks between the MAR outpatient clinics in Bergen and Stavanger (intervention arm) with standard treatment provided after referral to infectious disease clinics among patients who receive OST having HCV Secondary objectives: Compare treatment adherence between the intervention and control arms, and assess changes in quality of life, fatigue and psychological well-being before and after HCV treatment, as well as changes in drug use, infection related risk behavior, and risk of reinfection among those with sustained virological response. Main endpoint: Sustained virological response of HCV at 12 weeks (± 10 days) Study population: The target group will be patients receiving care with MAR from involved outpatient clinics in Bergen, Sandnes and Stavanger who are chronically infected with HCV and eligible for treatment according to national guidelines. Study duration: Participants will be included and followed up at least annually for the total study duration between 2017 and 2021. Expected outcome: This study will inform on the relative advantages and disadvantages of an integrated treatment program for HCV into MAR compared to standard care aiming to increase access to treatment and improved treatment adherence. If the integrated treatment structure is found to be safe and efficacious, it can be considered for further scale-up.
