First Time Mothers and Anal Incontinence Six Years Postpartum

Previous studies show that incontinence is relatively common during pregnancy and after delivery. Experiencing incontinence during pregnancy or in the first year after delivery increases the risk of long term incontinence. There is scarce documentation of the long term prevalence of anal incontinence (AI) in Norway. This study aims to explore prevalence and risk factors for incontinence approximately six years after delivery among the 1718 who participated in two previous studies exploring the prevalence and predictors of anal incontinence in late pregnancy and during the first year after first delivery, and the effect of pelvic floor muscle exercises as treatment for anal incontinence after delivery. Increased awareness and knowledge about risk factors and long term prevalence of anal incontinence among health professionals as well as pregnant and parous women may give indications about which women to target for preventative measures to reduce the risk of new onset of postpartum AI during pregnancy and after delivery. Further, increased knowledge may aid in planning individualized follow-up during pregnancy and the first year as well as in the long term among women with existing AI symptoms.

Polyacrylamide Injection in Patients Ineligible for Surgery

Transurethral injection using polyacrylamide hydrogel (Bulkamid®, Contura A/S, Denmark) is an established treatment for stress urinary incontinence. The rates of women reporting improvement or cure after Bulkamid injection for stress urinary incontinence range between 64-77% with a very low morbidity. However, the indications for use are unclear. Although transurethral polyacrylamide hydrogel injection is inferior to midurethral slings with regard to expected cure rates, the procedure is associated with very low rates of adverse events in general and serious adverse event in particular. As such, it may be an important alternative for patients where surgery is not considered a safe option either because of co-morbidity or because of complicated incontinence. The investigators performed a prospective study to determine the effects of transurethral polyacrylamide hydrogel injection in patients considered ineligible for midurethral sling surgery.

TOT, TVT And Burch Colpo-Suspension for Treatment of Female Mixed Urinary Incontinence

This prospective interventional randomized controlled trial will recruit women with MUI scheduled for surgical treatment where patients will be randomized to either Burch colposuspension, TOT or TVT. Prospective Registry for Patients Undergoing Surgery for Male Stress Urinary Incontinence

This will be a prospective collection of pre-defined parameters on the treatment of male stress urinary incontinence by an artificial urinary sphincter (AUS) and male sling. The data collection will be undertaken from multiple centers in Europe. The participation will be by open invitation to all members of the Female & Functional Section of the EAU (ESFFU) along with other urologists undertaking these procedures. There will be a call via the European Association of urology (EAU) to all European Urologists to register for database entry. There will be no restriction on the number of patients enrolled as long as they are consecutive. The aim is to have a long term collection of the data set from as many centers as possible. An initial assessment for the robustness of the data collection will be undertaken at 3 months by a nominated steering committee. However, the first clinical evaluation of the data collected will commence at 1 year by the steering committee. Thereafter, the evaluations will be performed after every 2 years.

Surgical Consent Process for Trans-obturator Tape Slings.

The purpose of this study is to determine if addition of a handout to the standard consent process for the trans-obturator tape (TOT) mid-urethral sling procedure will improve patients' understanding, recall and satisfaction with their procedure. The information provided in the handout will include the procedure details, the accompanying risks and benefits, as well as the expectations and alternatives to the TOT procedure. The aim of the investigators is to improve and standardize the current process for surgical consent for patients undergoing a mid-urethral sling procedure, specifically the TOT. The investigators hypothesize that addition of a handout will improve patient's preoperative comprehension by an absolute value of 10% compared to the standard consent process. The investigators further hypothesize that the handout will improve patient satisfaction and recall of the surgical procedure details post operatively.

The purpose of this study is to compare two methods for assessing patients with pelvic organ prolapse for occult stress urinary incontinence. Urodynamic testing is the most widely accepted and well-studied method for diagnosing occult stress urinary incontinence preoperatively, but an ambulatory pessary trial is a less expensive option that is available to a wider group of practitioners and evaluates patient while they are engaged in their daily activities.
