Although, there are few studies of vitamin D supplementation in SLE patients, especially in Juvenile Onset Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (JoSLE). The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of vitamin D supplementation (cholecalciferol 50.000 international units (IU)/week for 24 weeks) on disease activity (clinical and laboratory parameters), fatigue and bone mass.
The purpose of this study is to determine whether calcitriol is effective in the treatment of lupus nephritis.
Psychosomatic is a new approach to understanding the phenomena of somatization using the knowledge of medicine and psychology to treat human being. A Brief Group Psychanalytic Psychotherapy (BGPP) for psychosomatic patients has been used to supplement the treatment of some diseases including Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). The hypothesis of the study is that BGPP beside clinical treatment can improve the quality of life and coping in SLE patients. The aim of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of BGPP in Brazilian SLE patients. Primary objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of BGPP to improve quality of life. Secondary objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of BGPP to improve coping, anxiety and depression symptoms. SLE patients will be randomized to receive Psychotherapy or only clinical treatment. The effectiveness will be assessed through specific questionnaires.
The goal of the proposed project is to enhance the Principal Investigator's research ability to conduct behavioral interventions for people with lupus. This includes intervention design, implementation, data collection and data analysis. The Intervention to Improve Quality of life for African-AmericaN lupus patients (IQAN) Project is designed to examine whether a uniquely tailored intervention program can improve quality of life, decrease indicators of depression, and reduce perceived and biological indicators of stress in African American lupus patients. This study builds on three decades of work conducted in the field of arthritis self-management but differs in that the intervention mode, the disease (lupus), and the study population (African-Americans) are unstudied or understudied. The IQAN Project will use the Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance (RE-AIM) model as its theoretical framework. This program has three specific aims. The first aim seeks to design a three armed randomized, wait list controlled trial that employs a patient-centered 'a-la-carte' approach that offers subjects a variety of modes of interaction, allowing them to choose as many or few as they wish. The second aim is to assess the intervention, using the RE-AIM model framework. The third aim, to be achieved before the first aim, is to use previously collected data to characterize patient-centric barriers to care in African-American lupus patients, in order to identify trends in patient needs and desires, as well as correlates of non-response and non-compliance that can be used in the development and refinement of the intervention.
Dipyridamole, a medication extensively used in combination with aspirin for stroke prevention, is a promising new treatment for lupus. Dipyridamole has been shown to inhibit certain lymphocyte populations that are over-reactive in lupus and to delay the emergence of lupus-related pathology in mice with lupus. The investigators are interested in investigating the efficacy of dipyridamole in preventing flares in patients with lupus and its impact on biomarkers of disease activity.
This is an adaptive, dose ranging, Phase II study to investigate the relationship between repeat doses of GSK2586184 and the pharmacodynamic effect and clinical efficacy in patients with active systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). This study will also investigate the safety and tolerability of repeat doses of GSK2586184. During the study, up to 3 Interim Analyses will be conducted. These are to monitor the pharmacodynamic effect and safety following 2 weeks of therapy (Interim Analysis 1); and the clinical efficacy and safety of GSK2586184 following 12 weeks of therapy (Interim Analyses 2 and 3). Subjects who meet the entry criteria (approximately 150 to 250) will be randomized in a 1:1:1:1:1 ratio to receive GSK2586184 at doses of 50 milligram (mg) twice daily (b.i.d), 100 mg b.i.d, 200 mg b.i.d, 400 mg b.i.d or Placebo b.i.d. GSK2586184 tablets available in 50 and 200 mg dose strength will be administered orally up to 12 weeks. Subjects who complete the study will participate in the study for approximately 21 weeks.
This study will explore safety and efficacy of allogeneic umbilical cord (UC) derived mesenchymal stem cells transplantation (MSCT) to treat patients with active and refractory systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who have been resistant to multiple standard treatments. The underlying hypothesis is that the active SLE condition is caused by an abnormal immune homeostasis that can be restored by MSCT.
Cervical neoplasia is increased in women with SLE most likely due to cervical infection with human papilloma virus (HPV). 70% of cervical cancer is caused by HPV types 16 and 18. Gardasil vaccine prevents cervical infection with HPV types 16 and 18. Thus lupus patients (who are susceptible to cervical cancer) may benefit from getting Gardasil vaccine which can prevent cervical cancer. Vaccines are generally safe and efficacious in SLE but no studies have been done on the use of this vaccine in SLE. The investigators hypothesize that Gardasil vaccine is safe and effective in SLE. This study will look at vaccine safety in patients with mild to moderate and minimally active or inactive SLE and measure how well they make protective antibodies after receiving the vaccine. In other words this will check how well the vaccine works in SLE.
The purpose of this prospective, observational cohort study is to evaluate the incidence of adverse events of special interest (AESI) and effectiveness in participants with active, autoantibody-positive SLE treated with and without BENLYSTA (belimumab). Participants will be enrolled into 1 of 2 cohorts: (1) BENLYSTA cohort: participants receiving or initiating BENLYSTA plus standard of care (SOC) at Baseline; (2) comparison cohort: participants not receiving BENLYSTA but receiving SOC at Baseline. After enrollment, changes in lupus medications, including starting or stopping BENLYSTA, are at the discretion of the physician, and all participants will continue to be followed regardless of changes in their lupus medicines until study completion. All participants will be assessed for AESI including serious infections, opportunistic infections and other infections of interest, malignancies, selected serious psychiatric events and mortality. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of supervised physical exercise on endothelial function and number of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, as well as evaluate the effect of supervised physical exercise on endothelium derived growth factor (VEGF) levels, disease activity, quality of life, fatigue, perceived exertion and cardiopulmonary exercise test variables.
