Tracking Wound Infection With Smartphone Technology

This study aims to evaluate if a smartphone-delivered tool can help assess for wound infections, and if this improves access to care and results in earlier treatment. Participants will be randomised to one of two groups. The intervention group will receive the smartphone-delivered wound assessment tool (SWAT), to access if they have concerns about their wound. The trial period is 30 days.

Surgical Site Infection in Caesarean Section Using Alexis O Compared to Metal Retractors

Objective: To investigate if the use of the newly designed Alexis O Retractor leads to improved intra-operative and post-operative surgical outcomes in the setting of planned elective Caesarean Sections. Study Design: This ethically approved study is designed as a prospective, randomized controlled trial in planned, first time Caesarean Sections with 200 patients randomized to either the Alexis-O Retractor group or the conventional group. Patients with wound healing problems, connective tissue disorders, insulin dependent diabetes, bleeding disorders, previous major abdominal surgery and chorioamnionitis are excluded. Outcomes include surgical site infection, intraoperative parameters such as tissue damage, postoperative analgesia requirements and patient satisfaction scores.

Continuous v Bolus Infusion of Cefazolin During Ventral Hernia Repair

Patients undergoing an elective ventral hernia repair will be randomly assigned to receive either bolus infusion or continuous infusion of the cefazolin as the prophylactic antibiotic. The blood concentrations of unbound cefazolin would be measured in their blood samples and the levels compared within the two groups with respect to their minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) value.

The aim of this study is to assess the prevention of incision healing complications in patients undergoing revision TKA and THA treated with either Single-Use NPWT (PICO) compared to standard of care dressings (AQUACEL Ag Surgical Dressing). All patients undergoing a revision TKA and THA who consent to taking part in the study, and meet the eligibility criteria will be included onto the study. Patients will be followed up for a period of up to 3 months to determine if there are any latent incision healing complications

The rate of SSI doubles from low-income to high-income settings, persisting after risk adjustment. Investigating the diagnosis and treatment of SSIs remains a largely unaddressed global health priority. The impact of antibiotic resistant organisms and the effectiveness of antibiotic prophylaxis are unknown. This study aims to determine SSI rates following gastrointestinal surgery across worldwide hospital settings.

Effect of Mupirocin Dressings Versus Island Dressings on Surgical Site Infections in Elective Colorectal Surgery

Infections at the site of surgical incisions (SSIs) are the most common infection among surgical patients. Although all patients undergoing surgical procedures are at risk for developing SSIs, colorectal surgery has had consistently had high rates of SSIs, ranging from 3-45%. These infections can increase the length of hospital stay, and increase the rate of readmissions and costs. Further research is needed to study the effects of mupirocin in general surgery. A recent study compared colorectal SSI rates between mupirocin and standard gauze surgical dressings. The results of this show that mupirocin has the greatest effect on reducing SSI rate when compared to standard gauze dressings. However, these studies have not been performed in the United States and have only been studied on a very specific patient population. The purpose of this study is to assess the rate of infections at the surgical incision after colorectal surgery when a mupirocin dressing is placed versus a standard gauze dressing without mupirocin.

To assess the effects of a combined antimicrobial prophylaxis using oral ornidazole (the day before surgery) and intravenous cephalosporin (before surgical incision) with that of intravenous cephalosporin alone (standard of care) in combination with oral placebo on the incidence of SSI within 30 days after elective colorectal surgery.
