Prevention of Energy Deficit Syndrome in Female Athletes. Molecular Mechanisms Associated With Malnutrition.

Energy Deficit Syndrome (RED-S) is the impairment of physiological functioning caused by relative energy deficiency and includes impaired metabolic rate, menstrual, endocrine, hematological, immunological, gastrointestinal, bone, psychological, developmental and cardiovascular function. Eighty-seven percent of athletes show at least one symptom related to RED-S, with a higher prevalence in women. Treatment of RED-S preferably involves a multidisciplinary team of health professionals to address the complex interaction of nutrition, training, body image and performance. The main objective is to prevent energy deficit syndrome in female athletes in the province of Alicante through different training and diet protocols using a virtual platform. A 12-week single-blind randomized clinical trial with an intervention period and a control period (RCT) is proposed. The sports federations of the most representative practices in the province of Alicante will be selected by randomized sampling. The female athletes will be randomly divided into 4 groups (control group; control group with free use of the virtual platform; intervention group with Mediterranean diet and physical exercise planning; intervention group with red fruits and physical exercise planning).

Motivation as a Strategy for Adherence to a Stretching Program for Basketball Players

Background: Basketball is considered a medium-high injury sport, because of the mechanisms of injury, which can be acute, by repetition mechanisms or by overload. An effective way to avoid muscle overload injuries is to perform an extensibility workout such as an analytical active stretching program. The objective of this study is to achieve adherence to a stretching program by motivating young basketball players. Methods: Randomized experimental clinical trial controlled by a single blind person. 21 child players between 11 and 12 years, divided into intervention group (IG) and control group (CG). IG carries out a supervised static stretching program at the end of training 3 days/week for 12 weeks and CG has normally developed the standard stretches of their Basketball Club. The extensibility of various muscle groups was valued in both groups. In addition, motivation was valued by Sport Motivation Scale.

Prediction of Knee Injuries Through System Dynamics Modeling

The large number of studies in the recent decade dealing with knee injury prevention seems not effective enough to cause a decline in knee injury rates. Thus, it has been proposed to use non-linear mathematical models that simulate the operation of complex and dynamic systems. The present study aims to analyze the dynamic relationships of the risk factors for knee injuries through system dynamics modeling to effectively predict and prevent knee injury. The first part of this project includes a qualitative study informing the theoretical non-linear interrelationships among the risk factors. The aim is to examine the initial hypothetical model formulated in the first part of the project through statistical analysis such as factor analysis and structural equation modeling. Pre-season and in-season data from questionnaires and biomechanical measurements for risk factors will be collected from at least 100 athletes who participate in high-risk sports. The athletes will be monitored for injuries during one season, and these data will be used in the next part of the research plan. The next part of the project aims to develop a dynamic simulation model for predicting knee injuries using specific equations. The function of the simulation model will predict the propensity of knee injuries over time. The next step includes the validation and calibration of the model based on the knee injuries that occurred during the season. The validated and calibrated model will then provide implications for effective policy decisions in knee injury prevention.

Percussion massage therapy has gained popularity in the therapeutic and athletic communities over the past few years. Percussion massage therapy devices are extremely convenient to use, both for self-administration and by a physiotherapist. Percussion massage therapy in deep and superficial tissues; is used in many areas such as reducing pain, increasing blood circulation, improving scar tissue, reducing lactate level and muscle spasms, increasing lymphatic flow, inhibiting Golgi reflex, increasing range of motion, and is frequently used today. Vibratory massage techniques have been shown in many studies to improve joint range of motion and muscular strength. It has been argued that there aren't enough studies on this topic in the literature. Specially tailored treatments are utilized in the clinic to reduce injury frequency, improve muscular performance, and increase the flexibility of musculotendinous components. Various stretching methods are used to increase muscle length. Athletes use stretching exercises to improve joint range of motion and long-term performance. Furthermore, it is incorporated in the warm-up period of athletes' training plans to prepare for an activity or to cool down after an applied exercise. Many studies using the dynamic stretching approach have found that dynamic stretching exercises performed before an activity or a sport have a positive effect on performance and flexibility parameters. Instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) is a treatment method used to reduce pain, improve joint range of motion, and mobilize soft tissue using specially designed stainless steel instruments based on the principles developed by James Cyriax. The removal of scar tissue is one of the most important goals of IASTM. Microvascular bleeding occurs with localized inflammation as a result of IASTM application, nutrient and oxygen flow is delivered, fibroblast migration increases and the healing process begins again. At the same time, secondary collagen synthesis begins and is rearranged, which allows the regeneration of the injured tissue. As a result, it treats scar tissue, adhesions, and adhesions in the fascia. IASTM is a very effective approach in fascia tissue and is widely used to offer a mobilizing stimulus in the treatment of myofascial problems.
