Acupuncture Treatment to Reduce Burning Pain in Spinal Cord Injury

Acupuncture has been used with good results for many years at Toronto Rehabilitation Institute Lyndhurst Centre (Toronto, ON, Canada), Parkwood Hospital (London, ON, Canada) and GF Strong Rehabilitation Institute (Vancouver, BC, Canada) to reduce burning pain in individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCI). This multi-centre RCT will test an acupuncture protocol for treatment of burning pain in 40 people with burning pain in SCI, using a sham acupuncture protocol as the control. Objectives of Study: 1. To determine the feasibility of conducting a real acupuncture vs. sham acupuncture trial in a multi-centre study using the Lyndhurst Central Neuropathic Pain Acupuncture Protocol (LCCNPAP). This will inform a larger study which will directly evaluate the effect of the LCCNPAP on pain and Quality of Life (QOL) in individuals with SCI. 2. To determine which outcome measures are most responsive and the amount of change that could be expected, with respect to pain and QOL, for the larger study. 3. To obtain preliminary data to determine subject numbers for future studies evaluating the effect of the acupuncture protocol.

Study of Strengthening Exercises and Improving Movement for Painful Shoulders in Adults With Spinal Cord Injury

The purpose of this study is to conduct research to see if we can help people who have a spinal cord injury and shoulder pain to decrease the pain in the shoulders. We are investigating the effectiveness of a home exercise program for the shoulders and changes in how tasks are performed compared to an educational program on shoulder pain. There are no new experimental procedures included in this study; instead it is a comparison of two types of treatment that have been provided for this problem before. The new part of this study is the collecting of information before and after treatment. We hypothesize that those who participate in this home exercise program will have decrease shoulder pain and increase activity.

Preventing Pneumonia and Other Respiratory Problems in Persons With Spinal Cord Injury

It is known that individuals with spinal cord injury are at increased risk for respiratory tract infections like pneumonia. Part of this risk is due to weakened chest and abdominal muscles that are vital to deep breathing and the ability to cough. The purpose of this study is to look at the effectiveness of two different treatments in preventing pneumonia and other respiratory problems in persons with SCI. This is a randomized controlled trial investigating the effectiveness of two different treatments. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of the two treatment groups. They will not be told the details of the other intervention since this could influence or change their activities during the study.

Enhancing Indoor, Community, and Advanced Wheelchair Skills in Spinal Cord Injury (SCI)

We propose to test an evidence-based wheelchair skills training program to optimize wheelchair safety and performance in veterans with SCI. The proposed training program incorporates emerging evidence on wheelchair biomechanics and motor-skills learning, and addresses recommendations in a new clinical practice guideline. Given the difficulty in translating wheelchair skills learned in a therapy clinic with "real world" problems in the home and community post-discharge, we are proposing to conduct the wheelchair skills training in and around the veteran's home. The immediate goal is to enhance ability, performance time, safety, community participation, and quality of life, while minimizing physical strain. The ultimate goal is to reduce morbidity/mortality associated with wheelchair use and promote successful aging with a disability.
